Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the information. Thank you for the offer of IM if I need any advice. I am sure I will take you up on your offer as I resume my restoration. Please keep us updated on your restoration with photos. The 70 Rivi is a unique car. As others have said, you either love them or hate them. I think they have beautiful lines and look really good when properly restored.

I considered stripping mine as you have done, but decided to go the sanding route.

Are you going to put the fender spears back on the car. If you are, will you attach them with the speed nuts that were on there or will you attempt to reinstall them with some sort of bayonette fastener so they can be removed in the future without removing the entire fender?

Yup, I will be putting the spears on. I hope I will never have to take'm back off. I would say that the spears and the rest of that chrome line make the car. I just might leave off the lower molding, and chrome edging on the fenders and skirts. You have a good idea going that I just might consider. As it stands now, I've taken off the fenders several times when doing the body work that I might not need to bother with another type fastener :). Practice makes perfect.

btw, I haven't got any newer pix, our son was born 10 weeks premature so I've been a little distracted for the moment. I hope to get the paint on it soon though...we'll see.

Thanks guys for your comments and sharing pix of your cars.

Chad... I can sincerely appreciate the work you are doing on your car. Well done! Thanks for keeping us posted on your progress.

Also, congratulations on the birth of your son. Please accept my prayers and best wishes for a speedy departure from the hospital.

I'm planning on using a bayonette type clip when I put that trim back on my fenders.
I don't care to ever take those fenders off again. Especially for that trim.

Congrats on the birth of your son!

Thanks for the reply. Ditto on the birth of your son. Our son and his wife had a son two months ago. Being a grandpa is better than being a father. I don't have to change dirty diapers, get up in the middle of the night and when he cries I give him to someone else. I get to hold him and feed him - all the good stuff.

Let us know how that bayonette fastener idea works.

The bonnet from a model year 1968 or 1969 Riviera will also fit on your 1970 Riviera.

I've decided since to leave all the emblems off the hood. I filled the holes were the block letters RIVIERA would be on the '68.

    Hey guys,

Sorry for not updating...I was hoping to have the car painted by the end of the holiday break 12/27. I even went to the paint shop to get the supplies, I need to do a final guide coat first as the guy at the paint shop suggested (very honest guy, full of experience and knowledge). But then I received a nice diversion...I bought a Grand National. Don't worry though; I want to get the Rivi finished up as soon as possible. My plan is to paint it and have a few interior pieces redone. Then tires, insurance and gas.
Going back to the paint, I put a flat black on it as a guide coat just to catch any sheet metal distortion. I’ve got say, flat black against that side chrome looks amazing. Now that I got the GN, it could use a fresh coat of paint. So. I am a little torn on the Rivi, flat black looks good but If I want to repaint the GN I should just by the paint in bulk and paint both at once. Hmmm.

I can tell you, I had mine repainted in original glossy black last year, and just the maintenance on it is timeconsuming and a real pain in the butt. (luckily i do have Meguiars waxing products to take care of this)
If you have a choice, anything is better then glossy black...:TU:

I would not go flat black all the way, sort of satin black is cool and does not look cheap.

I did it...literally. Painted the car and it is back to black. Shiny black. The pictures shown are before the clear coat was done. I will need to get picture of it with clear coat before and after buff/polish. Stay tuned. :beers2:

Edit. Pictures would not attach...will try again

I am getting psyched about getting back to work on mine, and finally get the color sprayed now that warm weather is near.
