I have listed this car here before but wasn't 100% it was numbers matching. I recently cleaned up the engine block and confirmed that it is indeed a numbers matching GS. Thanks to those who replied to my post here on V8 Buick and helped me decipher the VIN stamping! Got plenty of pix, just e-mail or PM.

I would like to get $9,000 or best offer for the whole project and all the extras. This would include: (Not interested in parting it out, sorry)

Real, numbers matching 65 4 speed convertible GS and LR Code 401 nailhead with dual quad setup. Body needs attention. Floors are solid but some rot on the lower cowl/front edge of rocker, holes in trunk, some rot on the bracing on the underside. Factory 4 speed stamping is there though the hole was enlarged on side to accomodate a hurst shifter. Motor runs, car rolls, all suspension, wheels and original posi go with it.

3 frames: 1 open which the car is on now, 2 convertible frames, one is rusty, the other is solid. (yes the good frame came from Ted McKenney)

Muncie 4-speed is in the car-not original.

Fresh convertible quarters-both sides. Need some body work around the inner lip but these are full length convtquarters in great shape overall.

Original sheet metal (pretty rusty) GS-fenders, doors, radiator support, wheel wells, all original verde green matching the body. (all supports that this is a real GS)

Skylark sheet metal-doors (rusty but usable) Fenders-rusty, quite a bit of filler.

New GS fenders-these are Skylark fenders with GS portholes cut in-body work done, sitting in primer.

Clean wheel wells siting in primer.

Various parts: power brake booster & MS, 4 speed console, door & window components, chrome GS "portholes" manuals, exploded diagrams on CD-R, etc....

A big project but I think you all know how rare and valuable this car is. If noone wants it I'll keep picking at it until it's restored but it will take me 10 years at this so I'd rather see it go to someone who can get it done.

e-mail me at mcstarch@comcast.net with questions or if you want pix.

    Thanks,

    Jon

Project is further along, Skylark fenders are now GS fenders and the body work on them is about done, primed, blocked and ready second coat of primer...doors are being media blasted and they will be next. Still for sale, same price!

Here's a detailed parts list w/ condition. I found a 67 GS that is more of what I want so I need to move this project...make an offer.

1965 Buick Gran Sport Convertible Four Speed Project
Super rare numbers matching four speed project car with lots of extra parts.
Body: This is an original 4 speed convertible GS, one of only 598 made. The VIN matches the VIN stamped on the LR code 401 Nailhead motor which is in the car and running. Needs a lot of body work but most of the necessary parts have been collected and go with the car, more on those later. The car is sitting on an open frame, it was like that when I got it. The shifter hole has been widened for a hurst shifter but the factory four speed floor stamping is visible. Holes in trunk over rear body mounts, lower quarters rusted, front edge of rockers rusted. Hood and deck lid are not bad but no body work has been done to them.
Full convertible quarters: These came from a parts source in Texas and are complete from the rear of the door all the way back to the tail and are from a convertible. Media blasted and primed but need some body work. The wheel well lips are a little rusted and bent but the seller gave me clean wheel well patch sections from another car to use. Some dents and punky spots but overall very clean and very hard to find in this condition and this complete.
Two boxed convertible frames: Nicer one I found on V8Buick.com and came from Florida, very solid and straight, still has correct crossmember. Rear cross support is a little bent and punky. Second one is pretty punky but workable.
Motor: Original 65 LR code 401 nailhead. Has dual quad setup with two Carter AFB 650s on it. Runs and sounds good, no smoke or knocking. Runs rich though.
Transmission: Non original Muncie. Shifts hard and needs some attention. Hurst shifter installed.
Convertible frame transmission cross member: Correct for boxed frame
Rear end: Original 10 bolt posi, has the tag on it. Not sure of the gear ratio.
Three sets of doors: One very clean, rust free set of door shells came from a parts source in Texas. These have been media blasted and are sitting in primer. They need some body work, one had a dent that was pulled and the other has a small rust hole but I have a patch panel for it. Second set of door shells were on the car when I got it. I have the quarter windows and all internals that came out of these doors. They are rough but could be workable. Third set of complete doors are the original ones which still have the quarter windows, handles and internals intact. These are the roughest, bottom edge is rusted out.
Two sets of fenders: First set started as a very clean, rust free Skylark fenders from Texas parts source. Blasted, primed, holes were filled, GS portholes were cut in. All body work done professionally. These are sitting in primer smooth and ready for paint. Second set are the original GS fenders. They have the factory GS portholes and the original verde green paint is visible where the chrome pieces protected in from oxidization. Very rusted along the bottom in front of and behind the wheel wells.
Five wheel wells: Two original from the car, rusted. Two more that came with the car, not as bad , one of them was pretty nice and has been media blasted and primed. Fifth one I bought on eBay, clean and definitely usable.
Bumpers: Straight but pitted and some rust, probably would need to be rechromed.
Three Core supports: One very clean, rust free bare core support that I bought on eBay. Media blasted and sitting in primer ready to go. Second one is in the car and is from a Skylark, headlights and grill are attached. Third one is the original GS core support, still has the original GS grill, rusted out.
Interior: Buckets seats need to be done, drivers side definitely needs new foam. Rear seats are intact and not bad, would clean up well. Door panels are decent, some rips and tears but intact. Rear quarter panels and arm rest would clean up, kick panels as well.
GS Portholes: Bought off eBay. Not perfect, some pitting but definitely usable.
Miscellaneous: GS badges, heavy duty GS sway bar as well as Skylark sway bar. Two sets of upper and lower, front and rear control arms. One set on the car, one set off. Brake booster and master cylinder from a 66 Skylark, shop manual, 4 speed shifter console. Door internals and glass from Skylark doors. Rear quarter window internals and glass. Top motor and power top cylinders. (in car and not tested) Various small parts.

Those fenders are further along now, another coat of primer and they'll be ready to paint.

I have two boxed frames, that's the worst of the two, those quarters are full from door to tail and are from a convertible.

Car needs body work for sure, but a lot of the heavy lifting is done.

Now gosh-daingit Jon. . you are getting REAL CLOSE to the offer I had in mind a while back. . .Tellya what. . .DO YOU THINK all the parts/pieces & stuff you have for this 65 GS P'ject, ...could be loaded onto ONE CAR TRAILER??? Jeeeze man. This is killin me.  Wheelz, Tampa Bay

Come up and get it! The tough part would be the frames if you wanted both of them, the rest could fit in the car and in the back of a pickup assuming that's what you're using.

One frame is better than the other so might be able to get away with just grabbing that one.

Jon. . .guess its time to get serious. However, I need to know a few things before step 2. The following details are important TO ME because I already own a 65 GS Vert 4 speed. . .also needing 2 b restored. I have to consider all the options. . . so your replies are necessary.
FIRST: Do you have the original & correct Hurst shifter??
SECOND: Do you have all the bell "H" linkages, infamous ill-designed "Z" bars and links?? How about the flywheel? Is it warped? Rusty? Does the clutch release fork move freely on the Bell "h"? IS the RETURN spring intact and not broken?
I would really like to see additional pix of the dash unit, the windshield at the cowl area...the underside of the seats, front & rear. . .and the "lower cowl area" you mention showing the rust areas, AND a few inside and outside the rear tail light panel as well.
Ya see, my concern about your car and all its parts is this. My car, garaged for 28 years, is fairly clean, minor rust in the quarters. . . straight and 95% complete. . .however, it sports the wrong motor & tranny....BUT, it has a ton of options. Factory a/c, power windows, power seats, Tilt, 4 speed console with tach, BROKEN SHIFTER handle. . .
I guess what I am saying is, and I know you and I have gone over this once before and you were certain to let me know because I live so far away, is NOT your concern, and rightly so.., but I HAVE TO weigh the fact that buying your package deal, packing, boxing and driving BOTH DIRECTIONS... is going to somehow give me the edge when I finally get to the restoration of my car by having correct parts to complete my car for concourse showings. IT HAS TO BE RIGHT.
Google the round trip mileage from Tampa Bay to Dover & back is 2940 miles round trip at $3 gallon for diesel is almost $585 just for fuel! :eek2: PLUS 4 days on the road...that is. . .IF ALL GOES WELL...so ya see Jon, I have some figuring to do. Lets do this...if you would be so kind to send me a few pix I asked for, and gimme a few days to put something together, I will return the favor by giving you a quick honest decision so we can either close this deal or you can on and Ebay the car. DEAL? :TU: Wheelz, Tampa Bay

Here are some more pix. This car would have had a T10 in it originally, the Muncie is not original. I can't imagine the hurst shifter is either because someone enlarged the shifter hole to fit it in. The engine & tranny are in the car and running so I can'r inspect the flywheel, everything seems to work well, the car shifts although you have to force it into certain gears. Maybe the sychros?

Jon. . I sincerely appreciate the fact that you upheld your side of this deal, so now I'm upholding mine by giving you a prompt, honest and sincere reply. I have studied. Re studied. looked over. and over. Studied some more. Contemplated. Stared. Re looked.. . and decided. All the pix you sent show what I needed to see, to make a fair assessment. As you say, we all KNOW what this car could be worth once restored. key word ...COULD BE... no telling what the market for such a car will be 6, 7, maybe 9 years down the road? Thats about how long it would take someone like me to restore that car. ON the other hand, IMHO, my 65GS vert would be a much better place to start a restoration. O'Sure, your car is perhaps numbers matching and a rare 4 speed. YES its got minimal potential with the parts you already have, fenders, doors, quarters... AND you have some parts I KNOW I could use to restore mine correctly. However,...I cannot justify sending you even close to the $7000 for your stuff.. I just cannot see that kind of money for the car and the bits N' pieces you have, PLUS all that hauling is still a huge concern for me. Jon, I want to THANQ for your time. And all those pix. And giving me this opportunity. THANK YOU! Go ahead and ebay the car as you mentioned, BUT PLEASE... send me that link when you do. I will definately bid up to what I think the car is really worth TO ME!! Good Luck my friend! :TU: Wheelz, Tampa Bay
