Hey guys, 76regal 455, t350, just had motor and trans rebuilt, got engine all running and exhaust all done. Put maybe 40-50miles on it and there’s drips of oil coming down the small hole in flywheel cover. I tightened pan bolts and wiped clean. Still seeing drips. Ideas? Thanks Ray.

Is it red or black? Trans seal or rear main seal... To be absolutely sure, test with a fluorescent dye and a black light... ws

    It’s oil.

Good answer: it's engine OIL and transmission FLUID [IMG]

Sounds like your rear main seal is leaking, oil is collecting in the flywheel cover and leaking through the drip hole.
Don't overtighten the oil pan bolts, it will cause more trouble.

Is your rear main rope? They were somewhat leak prone back in the day and now that the rope seals have been redesigned without asbestos they’re worse. If you want to fix it use the improved rubber seal. Follow the directions people have posted on here. (If yours is rubber, was it installed correctly?)

If it is motor oil, then source is either rear main seal, rear cam plug but not likely oil pan seal.
In my GS i had to replace cam plug & rear main seal. Both were leaking.
While the engine was out we replaced all the gaskets & seals

I think the rear main seal is a pretty common leak point on a lot of engines. The only time I notice a drip from my inspection cover is at the track. Otherwise, no leaking at all. Guess I can't really complain about that. At the last GS Nats, I noticed one of the vendors sold a fiberglass inspection cover for the GN cars. Seems they have more of a problem with rear main leaks because of the boost. The cover had a small enclosure built onto the bottom, into which, you would fold up a piece of oil absorbent cloth. They wanted 180.00 for that inspection cover. Out of curiosity, I asked if they made one for the 400 transmission. They said they did, but didn't have one. For that price, I figured I could make one myself. I picked up a small metal box at Home Depot. I think it was for mounting wall sockets. I modified it so I could rivet it to the bottom of my inspection cover. Painted it black. Cut a piece of the oil absorbent pads commonly available, folded it up and put it into the box. I check it every so often, but never really see much at all.

Same thing here with C5's. We always worried if it wasnt leaking! We always left with 72 quarts of hydraulic oil and 36 quarts of turbine oil!

Out some more miles on it,..it will slow more than likely but a few drips over a few days is nothing to worry about

Idk if I’d call it a few drips. Looked more like a small puddle. Didn’t get chance look at it too much. Will get a better look tonight

When I did the rebuild on the 430 I took every precaution to get the rear main exactly right. It leaked the last rebuild and I wasnt gonna have it no more. After a few hundred miles it leaks again. Not bad bu still a couple of drips on the floor after she sits for awhile. Will just have to live with it. Way better than before!
