So on my gas 70 455 , i should be useing rottela desial oil for the zinc in it ? not the api approved stuff. Rotella IS API approved/rated. also, it is approved for use in gasoline vehicles. many stores now stock Rotella with the automotive oils because word is getting out on this subject. keep in mind that the new API formulation for Rotella ( CJ-4 , what you're going to be finding on the shelf everywhere now ) has more zinc than normal automotive oils but less than last years formulation. if you contact a Shell distributor you can still get 5 gal buckets and 55 gal drums of the older, higher zinc, CI-4 rated oil. http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?siteId=rotella-en&FC2=/roetlla-en/html/iwgen/leftnavs/zzz_lhnl_o
Happened to me too. Last rebuild (different cam) I used Rotella-T, and cam break in lube. No problems yet, need to add up some miles however. I'm thinking of staying with Rotella-T in my 455, and keep the synthetics for my 86 GN. ElectraJim 77 Electra 455 87 Buick GN
Yes, as long as you use there SL or less of a certified grade, like SJ....make sense? I'm no expert but I did stay at a holiday inn...sometime:laugh: Royal purple decided not to certify to API SM. If they did they would have to use less zinc and other anti wear aditives to a certain percent. Well actually they say 25 to 30 percent less than SL. If you want there oil with the most Zinc and anti wear content, there XPR or racing line has it. They told me the extact amount more but never wrote it down...it was a substantial amount. Hope this helps Guy
This was posted on the board some time ago. I wrote it down when I was looking for oil for my 464 for its initial start up. I simply wrote it down from a previous post and I am relaying it here as I feel it contains some good info. According to this list Valvoline Race contains the most Zinc at .20% in both 20w-50 and 10w-30. My local Napa store can order it for me by the case. Their book states in bold print NOT LEGAL FOR STREET USE. It runs between 6-7 bucks a qt. Hope this helps some
Have you guys seen Castrol Classic XL 20w/50? This is reccomended for pre 80s cars over here in the UK. When I imported my '72 350 Skylark from AZ last year, this is what I used for the first oil change. With 76k on the clock, I'm getting 25-30psi hot at idle, and around 40psi hot at 2000rpm. This oil is blended to resemble the oils that were available in the 60/70s, or what could be called "older technology". I've only done about 1000 miles, but so far but the engine is "quiet", maybe this stuff is OK! I will be listening out for lifter noises! There is probably a load of info available on the Castrol website.
