So, with my recent restoration I added dual exhaust and told my restorer I wanted quiet mufflers. He said he got the quietest he could find, but it's still loud. Any suggestions for real quiet?

What mufflers are they? 2 1/2" system? Long case mufflers like the Walker 17749 are about as quiet as you can get.

Performance and quiet have two very different baffling/chambers inside....

Not being sarcastic but that’s one odd complaint for a pre-emissions v8 car, those 2 pipes obviously generate that v8 sound regardless of the brand , but the other reason was balanced efficiency. The result is most often a pleasant low rpm rumble, like at idle especially through a packed stock style muffler. Just my two cents, sweet car ..: but no one in my Buick circle talks about quiet so it just generated a chuckle .
    Good luck on finding peace

You may think I’m crazy but if you add glasspacks before or after your mufflers it will kill a lot of noise and drone. They are barely thicker than an exhaust pipe so they fit many places. Alone they are loud and and annoying but paired with a muffler they work great to reduce the noise.

I had a little Chevy tracker with a 2.0 4Cyl and it had a flowmaster muffler installed before I got it. It was annoying, drone, and popped on deceleration etc. I added a glasspack before the muffler and it was perfect.

You can also get small resonators that will also help.

Depending on the size of your pipes, a couple of Cadillac mufflers from the likes of a 500 CI Coupe de Ville might be too quiet. Since one of them is good for flow from a 500 CI engine, I wouldn't expect restriction to be an issue...

Flip the air cleaner over it will take away some of the sound from the mufflers.lol
Stop flooring it for quiet sound.

Resonators just before the tips. Factory did it for that same reason

I’ve used glass packs as resonators also:cool:

ok, yes, I realize I'm the minority here re: sound, but I prefer a low grumble rather that the aggressive sound.

I wouldn't say you are the minority. I like my car to be relatively quiet until I step on it. The Walker long case 17749 is the way to go for a 2 1/2" system.

I currently have a 3" system with X pipe. I am using Magnaflow mufflers. They have the same characteristics as the Walkers I used previously. The car is surprisingly quiet for what it is.

This is a walk around of my riv right after installing the Walker long case mufflers and 2.5" exhaust system. The air compressor picked a bad time to cycle on.

    Flowmaster 70-series mufflers.

They are big BUT they are quiet and they flow great.

And if you have it in the budget, an x-pipe really tames your idle too (much better than an H-pipe).

This the setup we have on our 455 LeSabre that runs 13s - AND is quiet enough to take the teenagers on a long trip.
