Anybody still have their records from the days before CD's? I started cleaning out my basement a few weeks ago and dug out my old LP's. No easy feat because my basement looks like the warehouse at the end of "Raiders of the Lost Ark"! Found three wooden crates, one milk crate and a couple of cardboard boxes full of vinyl! Most was bought in the 70's & 80's. I never had counted them before but I did last weekend - 515 albums! And I may still find more...
From the top: Pioneer PL-530X Turntable (yes you youngsters, it plays "records" made of vinyl), Pioneer SG-9500 graphic equalizer, Sansui AU-717 integrated amplifier, Pioneer SX-850 tuner, Pioneer CT-F9191 cassette deck (yes youngsters, this records and plays magnetic "tapes" that are small enough to be portable), Akai GX-215D four track reel-to-reel for high quality recording and playback. Analog ROCKS. Devon
Does anyone remember the Scotch Tape trick for splicing tape, and why the angle was necessary? Oops, I'm dating myself. Wait...that didn't sound quite right... Devon
There are a couple of vinyl shops here in town that I visit occasionally. Years ago, I had an "Original Master Recording" (Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs) copy of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." It got swiped by the movers during a basement remodel, and I've been trying to find another copy that doesn't cost a kidney. I'll admit that I cheat with vinyl; I copy my LP's to digital so I can listen to them in my car.
I have an "Original Master Recording" (Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs) copy of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" in one of those crates. I remember paying $20 for it when you could get the regular album for $5. I figured if there was one album worth getting a Master Recording of, it was 'Dark Side of the Moon"! What are they selling for nowadays?
I posted some pictures on a Facebook music group that I am in of them and the first reply I got was from a guy wanting to know if they were for sale!
My 17 year old has inherited mine. She has a piece of crap modern turntable which has bluetooth (LOL).
I still have about 500 albums ranging from 60s-70s Country to 80s Rock and Heavy Metal. I also gave one of my daughters a turntable and 100 or so 80s Pop and Rock albums.
Nice setup!! Pioneer SX-1050 receiver here, Technics SL-1200, Phillips AF-977 turntables,DCM TF-600 and KEF 104/2 speakers. Garage system : Nikko Alpha 220 amp/Beta III pre/ Gamma I tuner/B&W DM330 speakers I even hooked my kids up with turntables! Analog rules....!! Mike B.... Good thread!!
Last time I checked, a “like new, rarely played” copy was around $200. I’ve seen ones still in the wrapping go for close to $500. 10 years ago I caved in and bought the MFSL gold CD of that album still wrapped and paid $150. If the jacket is in perfect condition with all the “goodies” that came with it, the price is usually higher.
Miss my old Pioneer system I bought new about 1980. Kept it 30 years before giving it away when I moved. Still worked great. Back when they were quality made in Japan and not like the disposable made in China stuff today.
My old stereo system is in the same basement with my albums. It is a mixture of components. Turntable and cassette deck need new belts and speakers need the woofers re-foamed. Receiver should still work... Hope to find out soon!
