One airbag or two?

As I understand, an airbag pushes down on one side of the rearend to preload it, so that both tires have even downforce once torque is applied by the driveshaft.

But I saw a remark somewhere the other day (forget where) that to get best traction, you want to put a fair amount of air in both airbags (say 20 PSI in driver side, 50 PSI in pass side).

Is it only the *difference* that matters (i.e. 35driver/5pass = 50drivers/20pass)? Or is there an advantage to having more total air (50/20 is better than 35/5)? Can I just run airbag at 30PSI with none in the drivers side (that's what I've been doing)?

Unless your unhappy with how your car sits, one will get the job done. All your trying to do is keep the twist down. Pressure? Start at about 15-20psi and go up from there. Then just look at your 60ft for your best time. There are different types of air bags and thats why there is no given pressure to start with.

I cut 1.51 60ft in a 72 GS with Dick Miller upper adjustables, boxed lowers, sway bar, and one air bag at 22 psi. My 8.5 rear end had stock axles with 3.73's. The only time I ever twisted a axle was when my air bag line had a hole in it and I had to run without it.

    Rick-

I'm happy with how the car sits (if it's not too high already), so I'll keep it with my 1 airbag.

    Thanks!

    Bob:
I have found that 2 bags work better than just one. I believe it is due to on launch it hits the pass bag then the drivers. Seems that 5-7 lbs in the drivers helps plant the axle. Gives it something to "snub" against. I only run 13-14 in the pass bag....more than that and I don't get proper weight transfer. Have run 1.42 60 ft. with Bennet Racing adj. uppers and Southside lowers.

BQUICK, Are you using the Southside lowers with or without the brackets that change the locating point. Just wondered because I removed my brackets and I am using Art Morrison adj uppers that I bought from Tom Rix, have not done any fine tuning yet they still have his settings.

Yes, I have Southside lowers with the bracket. I tried it with out (stock location) and the car would only hook at the very best tracks....pulled the front end higher tho. It seems to work best in the lower position. I get weight transfer AND some separation which seems to really plant the tires.
