I've been wanting to go to a really big u-pull-it place to up my odds of coming home with some gizmo I couldn't live without.

I work with a lot of guys originally from PA. and they've been telling me to go to Harrys U-pull it in Hazelton.

The place does look "gi-normus". Go to their website www.wegotused.com

Can anyone give me the low-down on the place?

I mean, they say they have 1000 cars but do any of them have what you want still in them? I'm looking for rear driveline stuff rearends posi's etc.

It looks like 1.5 hours past Harrisburg. Its a shlep, but I'm up for the road trip..
    Thanks

    Tom,
I was at Harry's in Hazelton a few weeks ago. They have a section of older cars. They have been picked over really good. There may be a good part here and there, but not too much. You may get lucky on the driveline stuff, but like I said it has been picked over. Also some of the older cars were being stacked. I don't know what they were planning. They have plenty of room to move them more in a corner or something. The rest of the cars are from the 80's to the early 90's. I think they take the never and older cars now to Kress's. I live around 2 hours away. I might be taking a ride out tomorrow or early next week (need some stuff for my 80's-90's stuff). I don't know much about driveline stuff. I will let you know if they stacked the rest of the old cars. Maybe someone else knows more than I do.

    Tom,
I think you will be very disappointed if you make the trip just for Harry's. Most of the old cars have been there for years and picked over pretty good, and when one comes in all the good stuff is gone in the first few days. However, if you do get lucky, the prices are hard to beat!

I live 20 minutes from them. I have been twice, only because it was too large to walk down in one trip. It is as described. most of the yard is 10-20 year old stuff. There is a section of older cars but I found nothing of value for Buicks.
On the other hand there is a yard full of 70's stuff in Nanticoke, PA. It is called Englers. Owner is in his 50's and inherited the yard from his dad from what I understand. It is somewhat picked over but there are some good items left. Owner told me he has 1 '74 455 with TH400. $450/$150 so he isn't exactly giving the stuff away. I looked in every A-body for GM bucket seat cores and couldn't find any. I was also looking for Old Cutlass Doors and again came up empty. This is not to discourage you. If you are making the trip go to Englers. FYI he does not take credit cards.

I have to agree with what is said above, Harry's is more of a "mainstream" junkyard. They just recently crushed a large portion of their old car inventory, which really wasn't much of a loss. Those cars have been there for so long, and were so picked-over that there was really nothing left worth taking. If you need something for a "daily-beater" type of car, Harry's is the hot ticket.

The majority of the cars are early 80s to early 90s. They are sorted by manufacturer, so it's easy to find what you want. There are about 10,000 cars at the hazelton location, and about 1000 at allentown, and 2000 pennsburg.

I was able to pick up a TH400 kickdown switch, PRND21 (non overdrive) shift indicator, TH400 kickdown related wiring, and a speedometer for my '85 pickup for $9. Any V8 motor with accessories is $89.95.

I didn't see any 455's my last trip up there, but I did find 3 500ci cadillac motors :Brow: I also spotted 5 or 6 Buick 350s from '69 to '79. If I had extra cash and storage space I probably would have picked one (or more) up.

Well I listened to everyones advice... and went anyway
I just had to see that many cars in one place!
    *You guys were absolutley right*
The old car section looked like the lunch buffet when you get there at 1:30..picked over!
There was a small section of old cars waaaay in the back. All the little hand-wagons had been rented so I carried my tool bag (loaded down with 1/2 inch drive stuff) all the way. I think one arm is longer than the other now.
Here's a real peach. It had a good set of snow tires on it.
I got the ashtray and the glove box spring off it. I think they were the only salvageable parts left.

All the other cars were on stands made of welded wheels.
But the old cars were down on their frames. This worked to my advantage.
I found a 72-ish lark with the rear I was looking for. I scrounged up a jack and a bunch of tires... there were tires everywhere, and jacked up the hind end.
It took around two hours to drop it on the ground and drag it out.
And only then it occured to me.. how the heck am I getting this thing up the hill and then how am I gettin it home?? :Dou:
So I left it were it sat. I took the driveshaft with me and headed home. :ball:
I was telling my dad about my misadventures and he offered to ride back up with me in his S-10 and take a chance at it still being there. So Saturday we headed out early and made our way to the far corner of the junkyard. Thats where we came to the fence... :puzzled: Hey, this fence wasn't here a few days ago.. All the old cars had been sectioned off and were going to be crushed. :jd: While I was ranting I stopped mid sentence and noticed Dad was leaning against an 84 Caddy Eldorado. Good find Dad! I can use those rear disc calpers. Then the lady in the van drove by and we told her of our plight with the rearend still in the old car section. She let us load our tool wagon up and gave us a ride through the gate to that part. I spent 112 dollars for a rearend, Eldorado brakes-rotors, and a space saver tire (they're handy). Turns out I'm not using the rotors. They're 10.5s
    In conclusion:
The place is BIG.. almost too big. We were exhausted.
The selection is great but very mainstream.. the old cars are gone.
The price is right but you gotta earn it.. think of the effort involved in dragging a wagon full of carparts all the way across Disneyland..
Thanks to everyone for the info and junkyard phone numbers. I have a bunch now to choose from :beer

I can't believe they are going to crush all the old cars. That is why a bunch of guys would go to Harry's. Just for that chance of finding that needed part. I remember that car in the picture. What was wrong with that door on the ground? I looked at the door and thought great door for someone. Only if it was a 66 Door. I think they just needed to go through the cars better and re-arrange them. They will sometimes get an older car in and put them with the rest of the cars. I don't understand why they don't add them to a weeded out section of old cars. Oh let's just crush them :Do No:

I went to Harry's yesterday and they told me all the cars that were fenced in were sold to one person. I was at the yard a couple of weeks ago and saw a couple of cars that were mixed in, that I could get some parts off of. When I was there yesterday they were crushed at the bottom of pile of cars. I said to them. Why don't you start a new area of old cars. The girl said I can not do anything about it and to talk to the guy in the trailor. I did not talk to him, but if anyone goes to Harry's please ask them if they can put the older cars in one area. If I was closer I would go back and ask. Maybe if enough people ask they will start over saving these cars.

This is a problem with everything in life! This is a business to these people and the ones I have run into are a different breed! If steel prices are high, they are going to crush and that's all there is to it! I've been given some prices on used parts that are just so high and if you try and reason with them, it's like talking to a wall. You KNOW the part is going to end up crushed and they will get $50 for the whole car, but won't sell 50lbs worth of it for $100!!

Two good examples I ran into this year. I called a local yard for a Buick HEI, I didn't even care if it was 350 or 455 because I can change the gear and they wanted like $150.00!!!!!!! Another yard wanted $285 for a power steering box for my 97 Chevy 2500. NAPA gets about $100 less for a re-built unit!

I must be going to the wrong places but tell me how they can expect to sell parts for more than new ones cost!!

I used to go to a year years back that was way more than fair. You could walk around and look and I even had them tourch some spring hangers off of a Blazer for me. I was charged less for the parts I think than the cost of the oxygen this guy used to cut them! Last time I was there I was getting a rear end for a friends car and all the old stuff looked to be gone!

The worst part is they get some old cars in. I would bet that if they put all the older cars in one area they would get more business. I just think they are DUMB  . They have cars that need to get crushed that they leave sitting and crush some good ones. Does anyone from that area have some input :Do No:

Harry's was a waste of time for me and I'm only about 30 miles away. I recently went for the first time with high hopes only to find that anything older than 1981 was in a seperate fenced in area. (an electric fence to boot!)

I asked about the 300+ (guestimate) of old cars in there and the lady said someone bought them.

I won't bother going to that place anymore. Also, they are the highest price of all the U-pull type yards I've ever been to. Live and learn...

  14. I have to admit the selection is bad. I have a rare car most people just crush lol 84 4-door bonneville, sweet g-body, just got the 72 buick350 motor in it. Anyways (sidetracked), I've been to Harry's probably a handfull of times and big ole harry lets me walk right out that gate with free stuff cuz I only pick up stuff like light bezels, door handles, other various small stuff lol Thanks Harry!!! Also I'd like to mention he has a calendar on his website, I want to get up there one day when he has $20 dollar motor days or 5 dollar transmission days. Nothing like buying something dirt cheap to have someone on ebay pay 400% the price.

Good to hear though that you got your dad to come along. Did you see the engine pulling stands they're like 20 feet high lol, my friend scott and I had a bear of a time trying to drag one of those with a big block thru the snow back to the exit... Also another downer is they take the turbo motors outta all the eclipses/talons before they even reach the yard.... and where are all the 79 Blazers?!?!!?

    Ok enough complaining :TU:
