I am looking for some info,

If someone would be so kind, I would appreciate if they could look up the part numbers for a 70, 71, or 72 Stage 1 Carb as well as the part numbers for the same year Stage 1 Chrome valve covers.

I would also like to know what source book/publication was used, and the publishing date for the same. I intend to use this material as a reference, so if the info could be scanned that would be even better.

I am sure some here know where I am going with this.

PS. I would prefer that you do not use the Dove books as reference material for this. Mr Dove compiled his information from many sources to make his books. I am looking for the info/source material that he used.

    valve covers :

from the july 1971 master book parts group 0.386, 1969 stage 1 valve covers, 1231542 RH, 1231543 LH

    it says, 1970-1972 stage 1 , 1233422 RH , and 1233423 LH.

HOWEVER, the 1981 book says, 1970-1974 stage 1 valve covers are, 1242882 RH, and 1242883 LH.

i was under the impression that most or all years of covers had a different part number. i dunno. i also have a parts book for 1964-1976 A body, effective may 1981 that i would like to study to see if theres any discrepancies. i can xerox anything you want and snail mail it to you. PM me with your address, it will go out asap. HTH, henry

    Duane,
My April 1975 parts book lists the numbers 1233422 and 1233423 as stated above BUT has no price next to them which usually indicated that it was no longer available or about to be discontinued.
The 1242882 and 1242883 are listed as 73-74 Stage 1 covers. Apparently the later books listed them for all 70-74 Stage 1.
I bought a set of them new in 77 (?) or so. Somewhere I still have all the receipts from my Buick dealer for all the items I bought from approx 71-84.
If you need anything I can scan in some pages and get them to you.

    Take Care,
    Mark

    Mark,
Thanks, your info makes this better and better.

I am planning on writing an article for the "Buildsheet" that goes into some of the pitfalls you can end up in when buying NOS pieces. If you can scan the pages and the cover page with the April 1975 date it would help.

If I can help one person from falling into the trap, it will be worth it.

    Henry,

I'm confused about these part numbers....I thought (at least for the 72 Stage 1 Q-Jet) the part numbers were 7042242 and 7042942.... :Do No: :Do No:

    Brett,
This is EXACTLY why I am writing the article. The numbers listed in the Parts books are the numbers on the box (Ordering numbers), NOT the numbers stamped into the parts.

There is so much mis-information out there, so many books referencing incorrect numbers, that people are getting confused, and are assuming their "correct original parts" are wrong. Then they go out, spend tons of money buying NOS pieces they assume are correct, and end up with the wrong pieces. Then I get to tell them that when I judge the cars. Sometimes with them screaming at me from 1-2 inches away!

and on top of all that, sometimes parts books just got the wrong number, either by typo or whatever. i have found a few wrong numbers in the books over the years. some were just plain factory mistakes. it makes it hard on the parts man. never put too much trust into a book.

duane, i plan to get that mailed on monday.
