Does the top need to be removed or just put down to remove it on a 72 GS ?I just want to take it off to paint and leave the top alone. Or is this impossible?:Do No:

George that would be the two piece around the back and yes it can be removed without removing the top.

    Jim,
What threw me off is when he said he wants to paint it.....the item that goes around the rear conv well is stainless and does not require painting.

I sure know that as I have taken several off, straightened and polished them. I assumed he meant to paint under the molding.

I seem to remember philips head screws going YP from the under-side of where the molding lies. With the top on, I also remember needing one of those "L" shaped screw drivers (for tight places) and having the top about half way up to gain the best access

....I also remember swearing alot and not having very much fun doing it

The L-shaped screwdriver is made by Lisle and they are excellent. They also work great on the wheel well trim screws since you can apply a great deal of axial pressure on the screw to keep the screw head from being stripped.

Sorry about the confusion, George. I meant ,take it off so I could paint the body underneath instead of masking it off , if it was an ordeal to do.Thanks for the info , guys ,but the amount of cursing would need to be on a scale of 1 to 10. It's been awhile ,but I've let a few wrenches have the old heave-ho across the garage !
