If I pull the pinion out, replace the bearing and put it back in as it came out. Do I still need to worry about setting back lash, etc. The axles and carrier are all ready out, just want to rebuild it completely drum to drum. Thanks, Scott
Cannot just pull out the pinion & blindly reinstall. Pinion is set at a specific depth & loosening or tightening pinion nut will effect pinion depth as well. A "loose" pinion will wear different than one that has correct drag, & such a previous "loose" pinion condition will often create problems when trying to later set up well worn gears. If pattern looks good on a used ring & pinion, & there is not excessive wear, used ring & pinion can often be set back up & rear will be quiet, but at a minimum, backlash will most likely need to be changed to get optimum pattern. On some well used GM ring & pinion sets I 've reinstalled in their original matching housings, have had best luck starting out with a .001 thicker pinion shim, then setting drag & then resetting backlash. One thing seldom addressed... chasing patterns, w/o there being sufficient drag placed on the pinion flange, when axle is turned, a ring & pinion will not pattern out correctly, pattern will be hard to read & one will not have full picture of whether the ring & pinion are set up correctly. :3gears: Roger
A how to book on carrier installation and settings? Roger do you any book at there that goes over how to install a rear carrier and all the required settings when rebuilding? Thanks, Scott
