I was thinking about using these pistons:

I have heard that it is good to smooth sharp edges on the pistons to help avoid detonation. The valve reliefs in these seem to leave a lot of sharp edges! What should be done to these, as far as smoothing/polishing?

I would use a Dremel tool to smooth out the sharp edges. I did it to mine and it "seemed" to help spark knock. Can't hurt......

how aggressive did you get with it?

Not very, just took the sharpness out of it.....esp the center where the 2 reliefs come together.

Dremel also has flapper wheel sanding pads. They worked great when I did my pistons. I believe I used the 70 grit ones.

I like to do mine by hand as it gives me a better feel for when enough is enough...you dont want big variations from piston to piston for obvious reasons!

Then I polish them on a buffer with a "loose" pad.

For comparison sake I would love to try one of the new high tech coatings in place of the polishing routine.
