RUST FREE Cutlass Shell FOR SALE

I've gotta question. I'm more likely in the near future to own a regular Cutlass than a 442 or W car. If my car is "pure stock" would it be allowed to race? Any guess what a 70 Cutlass with 310hp 350 or a 71 with 260hp would run in the 1/4 mile? Thanks.

Mid 15's with a stock 310hp engine. 14.0 with a bone stock W31 package (not just the engine), low 13's with everything setup right on a W31 like OEM says.

There was a 70 W31 clone running at Pure Stock 2 years ago (I think) and he ran upper 15's. Green car, white vinyl top, W31 badges.

Dan Jensen's bother has a 70 4 speed Cutlass S that's got everything except the W31 package. Uses same engine as Rallye 350. Not sure what he's run in the 1/4. Beautiful Sherwood green car.

of course, if Matt bought a 70 Cutlass non a/c car (or perhaps an F-85), he could eventually build a W-31 clone, err replica ... :Brow: :Brow: I'm sure myself with the help of a some people could locate some of the required pieces.

And I happen to have one for sale. :)

Actually, building a W31 clone is one of the reasons I bought it.

The 1st race I went to with the Vette was Brad's race at Quaker City. I raced a 72 350 Cutlass vert. I ran 16.0's :3gears: and won. :beer That's when I had a wee' oh five and 3.08 gears. I think he was running 16.30's.

71 and 72 had low compression, the 68-70's were much faster. They fudged the advertised hp numbers to cover it up. Think they were about a second slower than the earlier 10.25 to 1's. Huge dishes in the pistons, shlightly larger combustion chambers on the later ones.

Also most rebuilds today use the Felpro .048 thick composite head gaskets vs the .017 steel shims from the factory. .030 is a lot of compression difference. You could probably run a rebuilt 71-72 with Fel pro gaskets on possum piss. Hey Rob Clary bring up a jug or two to Martin!

My friend's mom had a '71 Cutlass Supreme and it was a DOG! Wouldn't even spin the tires.

(Sigh!) Why couldn't I have been born earlier, when I would have learned to drive in something other than a Volvo or a stone of a Cutlass?

    Thanks

Thanks fellas. I had a feeling I wouldn't have a problem. Hey Dirty Sanchez can you email me some info/pics of your car? I think I saw your ad on realoldspower.com but I'm not sure. My email address is crumleym_50@yahoo.com.
Chris (juniorsupercar) is right I definitely know the right people to get the most out of an Olds 350. So if anyone has a post Cutlass or F85 please let me know. I will be more serious this fall if the potential new job happens (everyone's prayers appreciated) and I can get a toy:).

74-75+ when they squared off the body wasn't so bad. I had one of the last big body gutlasses and even with 75,000 it would spins the tire for blocks on command. Think it was a 78-79. White with red plush interior. Awesome car.

Drove a small body 80+ one once in the winter. Was impressed on how well balanced it was. You could swing it all over and it was easily controlled. No over correction problems as you felt very attached.

I don't think Dan will even thought Brad did. The standard cutless I beleive only had a single exhaust and a 2 barrel. I would e-mail Dan first before making a purchase for the intent of PSMCDR.

You could always get a 4 barrel and dual exhaust as an option on Cutlasses back then. Put it on the right way and you're in.

    W31

Does a car that started life as a Cutlass need to be rebadged as a W31 if the drivetrain was built to W31 specs? Basically can you build a clone mechanically but not aesthetically and still race pure stock?

I would think so, because the OAI air cleaner, hoses and scoops were only available on 68/69 small block cars with the W-31 option. 70 I think gets a little stickier (Dave? Casey?) as I believe you could order the hood and air cleaner seperately on a big or small block.
doesn't it boil down to the horsepower claimed? If you built a W-31 spec motor to put in a Cutlass (or F-85) and claimed the motor was 325hp, then wouldn't it have to be badged correctly as a W-31?

My opinion is that *aesthetically* takes in a LOT of territory, and can mean different things to different people. If you're gonna build a clone, then build a CLONE, don't pick and choose pieces/parts...now, if those pieces were available without ordering the full W31 package, then go for it...:TU:

I'll talk about 68 here, some minor differences for 1969 (M38 auto trans available, probably different gear ratios)...For 1970 only (no W31 ever made it into production after 1970), even more things available as the emphasis was less of a race car and more of a hot street car.

You can order some of the pieces (the mandatory options like 4 speed, posi, 3.91 axle or bigger, heavy duty cooling, F41 suspension, dual exhaust) separately, but the only way you get that motor and that ram induction package in 68-69 is with the W31 package itself. If you're running Pure Stock and run the numbers we do, the cost of the decals on the fenders is minor compared to what it's going to cost you to get to that level.

If you're running better than mid to high 14's with a non W31 Olds 350, you need to be checked. That includes Rallye 350's.

In 1968 and 1969, the W31 used the same air cleaner, hoses and scoops as the W30 (and the 68 Hurst Olds and 69 W32 for that matter). Slight differences from year to year but basically the same. Only difference in the big block and small block ram air setups in 1970 is the seal to the hood. As Chris says, you could get the hood and ram air setup separately from 1970-1972 (RPO W25 if I remember right).

It really should be on the right body/models, too (F85, Cutlass and Cutlass S, not Cutlass Supreme or 442). Otherwise I would be running a 68 442 W30 with a 455 to Hurst specs on it. I have one, and it had that engine in it at one time recently.

Suggest you talk to Dan and/or Bob directly before you try to find a seam in the rules. Might save you a lot of grief and embarassment later.
