I am getting ready to replace the top on my wife's 72 GS vert. It has a plastic rear window. Should I replace it with a top that has a plastic window or one with a glass window. What are the Pro's and Con's? Thanks!

    Randy,
Spend the extra money and put the glass rear window in it now. The plastic windows don't last too long and you have to do a ton of work, basically removing the top where it attaches to the body, to replace them.

All plastic windows with time will get so cloudy you won't be able to see through them. I favor the glass.

The ONLY reason to go plastic is to be a chespskate. Go glass, no doubt about it!!

    Hey Guys

Thanks for the input. I ordered the top today, with a glass rear window. It was only $125 more for the glass. Can't wait to get it on. It will improve the looks of the car 100%. I think the top that is on it is the original factory top. It was pretty worn. This car will never be out in the elements again now that we have a six car (2,200 sq. ft.) garage as part of our new home. Pictures of garage and cars to follow. Thanks again.

Unless a car is strictly show and a trailer queen... 8-10 years would be a nice long life for a top... a few years at best for a plastic window - they get brittle and tear easily. I believe the Centurion is on its third or fourth top. It's OK at six years old, but I'll be pampering it to get to 10. Glass always looks much classier. Well worth the extra cost.

raises the question, when did buick start to install only a glass rear window in the convertibles ?
i believe in the chevy impalas, for instance, glass was standard in 1962.

    correction--- should have said 1965.

I think that the switch from plastic to glass didn't occur until the late '60s. My dad bought a new GTO 'vert in '66 that had a plastic window. When Pontiac changed GTO/Lemans styling in '68, I believe that was their first year for glass. I think that this change was across the board for GM intermediates. So, at least for GS/Skylark, Buick's first glass back window was '68, I believe.

You'll be very happy with the glass. Especially in the winter (if you drive it then).

Thanks for all of the help and suggestions. We went with the glass window. The top really looks good. When I get her all shined up and we go out for a drive people constantly look at the car and smile or give a "thumbs up." When we are parked, people will drive by real slow and give her the once over and somtimes stop to get a good look. There is something about a black on black car, especially a Buick. Thanks again!
