My windows squeak like no one's business when they are rolled up and down. I'm itching to fix it before the weather warms up and I'll be using them quite often. Is it as simple as taking the panels of and spraying the internals down with WD40? (I sure hope it is) But if not, what do I need to do to fix the glass shattering noise? Oh and I've never disassembled the door panel, so I'm not familiar with the layout at all. Thanks for all the help. :TU:
The grease in the tracks where the rollers are is probably really dried out. It's only 38 years old, right? Door panels on these cars are easy to pull assuming you have even a modicum of mechanical apptitude. Pull the screws out of the bottom, pull off the armrest, pull the window crank, remove the mirror hardware, carefully pry the steel pins out of the plastic receivers around the sides of the panel (don't tear the cardboard panel backing) lift the panel up towards the top of the car.
Alot of times its the belt moulding, sometimes called the "window wiper", it too gets dried out and squeaks on the glass as the glass goes down or up. It could also be the anti rattle pieces inside the door that keep the glass from rattling when the window is partially down, the felt gets all flattened and squeakes as it drags on the glass, the felt is suppose to be fuzzy. Hope this helps. Mark
Thanks Brad and Mark. Is there any specific grease I should use, or that you recommend to start with on the tracks?
Use the lithium grease in an aerosol can. It's a bigger job to do this but it would help if you could remove it all and clean it up first, then lubicate it. Most likely you have dirt and dried grease on them that should be cleaned off first to prevent further damage from grit. You obviously have manual windows but dirt buildup is the #1 cause of power window motors going bad. The tracks get dirty and cause the motors to work harder causing eventual failure.
I suggest spray can lithium grease as well. I was having a hard time getting my rear windows to go down and sprayed the tracks and rollers with lithium grease and haven't had a problem with them since.
I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when I found my first can of spray lithium grease! :birthday: :beers2: Spray Lithium Grease > Sliced Bread Spray Lithium Grease > Peanut Butter
Dont overlook this when you have it all apart - the anti-rattle pieces control how much pressure the glass puts on the fuzzies ... and like Mark said the felt gets worn or may have "disappeared" completely. I found that the loop part of hook and loop material (velcro) is very close and worked well BUT the sticky on it was not sufficient to hold it ... some 5 minute 2-part epoxy worked hope this helps
I assume the white lithium grease would also work for the door hinge squeak as well? Just a little more tricky....
