my 72 GS is a california car and it has an EGR valve, air pump and a temperature comtrolled vacuum valve for the timing. California does not require smog inspection on car this age so I'm thinking of eliminating this extra excess.

My question is:  would I be able to se a difference in performande by eliminating this equipment?

    Thanks

Probably, but don't throw away anything you remove.

There was a long posting here a few months back where CARB proposed re-applying all standards back to 1966, basically repealing the 30-year exemption.

It was not approved, but the threat can reappear again, so hold onto your parts.

i've heard those smog pumps like to lock up if not use, though.

but i'm a risk-taker, so i'd hurl the thing into the nearest ditch.

my driver ('82 I6) passed local emissions with flying colors with no smog pump and a craptastic cat...thank god for carbs. if they ever tryed to renig on the local rule of no testing on pre-'74 cars, i'd just lean it out and immediately fix it as soon as i got my 'you passed' ticket.
