I agree with the Protecto-Plate data being corrupt. My 71 non-X POP has incorrect engine/trans codes as well. I have the #'s trans to proove the data is bad.
OK. Aren't the 71-72 spoliers different than those of 70? Faking that piece would probably be hard to do. Just brain-storming here.:Comp:
Thanks clearing that up. Strange that the same mistake is on your protecto plate too. I considered driving 180 miles and looking at the car. Problem is that I'm afraid I'll do something silly like buy another project car! I do like the code 62 paint.
I have seen so many incorrect 71 protect-o-plates that when I see one that is correct I am surprised. Duane The bottom line is this, if there is no buildsheet to prove it's a GSX then it would take someone like me to check it over and verify that the parts/paint stripes are correct and original.
He's been all over the car & can't find the build sheet. He did say the tranny matches the sn, but the engine was replaced along time ago.
That car looks legit. Black stripe rocker panels ,worn GSX dash pad emblem, appears to be original paint that has been sanded for repaint with stripes still showing, painted headlight bezels.Hood tach although optional on 71 -72 GSX cars looks old. Frank do you have an under hood shot, there should be a heater nipple on heater box or AC shroud with hose to plug onto underside of hood tach. Car should also have 3:42 rear axle gear even non stage 1 car got this when ordered as a GSX However, at the end of the day without paperwork one cannot unfortunately prove it's authenticity 100%. 71 GS cars are a documentation blackhole!
Go ahead Gary buy it, we need this GSX? in the local area. Your purple GTO can go in my garage if you need space. :Brow:
I think the GTO convertible you saw was actually my mother's car, but yes I need a place to store cars ...I already have 4 stored at my parents' place because the 3 garage spaces at my house are already full. I'll tell my wife tonight "honey, I NEED 1 more car", her first reply will be "where you gonna put it?". It is an addiction and I admit it. One of our cars is a '71 Chevrolet and is also paint code 62, that same as the '71 GSX that we are all discussing. That GSX would look sweet if restored....
I would buy Duane a ticket and go look at this car. I think it is legit. But that would be if I had the money. My 71 protco- plate calls my car a stage 1, but it is a 455.
He sent me several pics, and it does have the evaporator to tach hose for condensation. He also told me he found the buildsheet under the carpet that is 90% intact. Looking at the pics, I think the car is real. Go for it, Gary!
This car is the real deal Check out the heater nipple on inside of AC box with hose attached that then passes to one way check valve than hose plugs onto underside of hoodtach. Also note perfectly round hole for hood tach. All Pontiac GTO's and Buick GS cars factory equipped with hood tach's starting late 1970 for GTO's and all GTO's and GS "s though 71-2 model year MUST have this Heater nipple hose Check valve . I own a 70 Oshawa Ontario Built GTO Judge with 06B build date 2nd week of June 1970 with heater nipple for hood Tach. Someone needs to scoop this car NOW
Does anyone know what the factory option load is on this car. N25 ? F41 Rear bar? Rally Guage cluster? Rally steering Wheel? Factory wheel and tire combo?
Rich, I don't know about the factory options, but from the pics the car: Doesn't have the N25 rear bumper Does have Rally gauges 15" Rally wheels I asked for but didn't receive under carriage pics so I don't know about the F41 suspension. I also can't tell for sure what steering wheel it has, but it looks like a bucket seat car.
When I had my Real (1 of the 44) GM of Canada Documented 72 GSX 350 car a few years back it was a was a legit UB5 factory hood tach car with heater nipple hose ,check valve ,hose with all supporting clips like this car has. Hood tach cars are exceeding rare and were optional on 71 -72 GSX cars as were front spoiler to complement the the WA5 GSX ornamentation package that only gave you Rear wing, GSX stripes, emblems, black stripe rocker moldings and painted headlight bezels (only 71 ) as all 72 GS and Skylark had bodycolor painted bezels with blackout around headlight bulbs. Everything was optional on 71 72 GSX cars even body colored sport mirrors. If they were not ordered you would have a 71 72 GSX with a chrome mirror on drivers door. This makes every 71-72 GSX a very unique cars unlike 70 GSX option that included all the good stuff making all those cars very similar with the exception of luxury option s like PW ,tilt est.
If this car does not have original engine but has original trans and is a Turbo 400 and matches cars VIN that will prove whether it's a Stage or non-stage car Anybody know Trans tag info and whether it is original trans to car?
Another cool car located as far from me as possible, if you are going to restore a car might aswell make sure it is as rare as possible to begin with and this is defintely one , anyone here buy it yet? At first when it said Jasper, Al I got excited as I thought it was Jasper Alberta not Jasper Alabama. Hope someone buys it soon and brings it back to life bill
I just spoke with the owner on the phone. He is a very nice guy, but is into Fords, not Buicks. He had this car since he was 11, and said it had a hole in the block, so they used a station wagon 455 and got it running. It's been sitting in a garage since 1988, and supposedly the rear window area and core support are the only rotted areas, and the rest is surface rust. He is going to get the trans tag and carb info and call me back, but claims the previous owner said it was a Stage 1. He also said the build sheet is 90-95% destroyed, and only the "Inspected By" corner is readable. If you are interested, call Mr. Keeton anytime at 205-275-4549. He sounded firm at $20k, and is basing his price off of the NADA Guide.
