Hope someone can give me some info. Will be pulling a 396 from my buddies chevelle. I have pulled many motors, but they all had automatic trannies. This has a manual tranny. What is the differance when seperating the two. thanks for any help.

as far as i know its pretty much the same as an automatic. the only extra steps you would have to take is disconnected the stick from the inside of the car. may have to take out the consol to get to all the bolts?!?!?

i helped pull a manual tranny on a chevy s-10 and it wasnt too bad.

The easiest route by far is to take off the shifter arm (from interior) then just remove the Trany, take out the two bolts at the xmember in the rubber mount. Then loosen the x-member itself. Next take the four bolts out of the bell-housing and yank the tranny. You might want to support the back of the block with wood. Then from the top side you can pritty much just yank the motor with the bell-housing and clutch attached. Fairly slick and straight forward. Hey and remember to remove the Clutch return springs and the spedo connection.

Obviously there are a few ways to do this and lots of opinions. I think the fastest way is to loosen and de-link the z-bar from the clutch linkage and engine, unbolt the bell housing from the engine, support the tranny with a pile o' wood or mother-in-law, :Brow: slide the block forward until the input shaft clears the driven disc and pressure plate, lift 'er out. I then just wire the bell housing to the firewall or whatever I can find so I can move the car. Pull the tranny at leisure when you do actually want to get it out of the car (maybe you don't??). Taking the tranny out first means removing the shifter, driveshaft (good idea to mark its clock location at the pinion), speedo (these are extra steps not truly necessary for engine removal). If you do take the tranny you might find it useful to get a tailshaft plug.
