I was reading some info on buickdav's hood scoop thread and decided to ask this separately from that thread. Dennis Halladay noted this:

So, am I wrong when I say that using the riches secondary rods I can find is good?? It seems as though that using rich rods is wrong. But at the same time, if I floor it from a slow roll, I still need the rich mixture to get out of the hole.

Any ideas? What would be a good secondary rod to use? I am currently using some pretty rich rods...the tips could puncture my skin if I touch them the wrong way.

    Adam -

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. The correct rod varies based upon atmospheric conditions - "good air", with low temperature and high barometric pressure requires a richer mixture. "Bad air", with high temperatures and low pressure will run stinky rich with the same rods. The more dense the air, the more fuel per unit volume (CFM) of air for peak power.

This is really important if you race the car in varying conditions. For a normal guy with a normal street car, the best compromise is usually to tune for best mileage (leaner rods) and keep an assortment for your 1/4 mile jaunts. Of course, your avatar might raise questions about your normalcy:eek2: so the choice is up to you!

    Thanks for the info John...

I'll play around with different rods for a while and see what works best. I have quite an assortment of rods from pocket treasures at the junkyards:grin:

Mandys GS always runs the best MPH with CC rods, and drops off with anything larger.
