    My car has a smell.
It smells like it is running very rich.
My car will idle at around 950-1000 in park.
but put it in gear, 550-600.
It just seems to low rpm to me.
So, I try to adjust the carb.....Oh my,
    Now it really smells rich.
I just don't think it is adjusted right.
Can I get some help on how to start all over on adjustment?
Are there more tricks or adjustment than the 2 screws in the front of the carb?
    Sorry about the greenie question!
    Thanks for the help!

Has it been running rich for a while now? Do you remember doing something that triggered the rich smell?

What intake are you running? And are you running all the stock vacuum lines?

Turn the idle mixture screws in until they seat. Turn them back out 2 full turns, and then adjust for the most vacuum using a vacuum guage.

Then re-adjust your idle speed screw....

    What is your timing?

    Remember I'm very green!

Man Adam you are up early!
    Thanks for your help here!
Nothing new really on the rich smell.
Just finally wanted to try to do something about it.
I have an original 72 800 cfm carb.
    a b4b intake
and can only "assume" original vac. lines
I don't have a vaccum testor or many other tools at all.
I haven't a clue what my timing is set to.
Can you tell I have a patient and nice mechanic?
    Thanks for any additional help!

What is your vacuum acvance hooked up to? (the vacuum line coming out of your distributor).

I have almost the exact setup you do, except for the fact that I got rid of the vacuum tree on the intake and replaced it with a temp guage.

Do you have a vacuum guage? If so, use this to adjust your mixture screws in or out to get the most vacuum you can. Once the vacuum stops moving up, back it off a hair.

The most important tools for tuning an engine: vacuum guage, inductive or advanced timing light, and a dwell meter.

Are you capable of putting a rebuild kit in that carb? You may also have to re-jet it. Depending on if everything else checks out:TU:

This is kind of the same spot I'm in right now, as I'm walking out the door this morning to make a stop plate for my vacuum advance cannister. My engine pulls too much vacuum on the advance cannister, and makes the car idle at 40* advance.:eek2: IgnitionMan Dave showed me how to make a stop on the advance cannister that will only allow it to pull 8-10* of advance at idle.

It took me forever to figure this out.:Dou:
