    71buickskylark Buicks kick A$$!!

My question is similar to the question that Fast87buick asked in his thread (Qjet Application). I'm in the process of converting from a 2bbl to a 4bbl setup. I'm in the process of getting the intake, next steps is finding the carb. I want a Qjet for the dependability factor, but wondering if I can use a qjet from any year from 68-72? Are they pretty much the same carb? (except for cfms and choke issues). I've got a 71 with a 350. I'll be getting the TA alum intake. I was on evilbay the other day and saw some for a decent price, was thinking of having John Osborne rebuilding it. What should I be looking for when buying one? :Do No:

7041544 is the correct carb. for a '71 350. This is only if you really need the right "correct" one. The carb. guys here will likely be able to modify almost any Q-Jet to suit your needs.

Any good Q jet with the proper fuel inlet position and linkage will work just fine. It should be easy to find the correct year carb here for that engine combo; just post in parts wanted and *viola* your mailbox will overflow!

Any 68-74 Buick 350 Q-jet would be a viable starting point. All will be 750 cfm

I actually found someone selling this carb on evilbay. That's the exact part number listed. I asked him if the linkages, throttle moved freely and he said yes. Looks good to me. If I can't get that one, I'll post in the "Parts needed" area.

Quick question, with the new setup (intake and 4bbl carb) will the present fuel pump work just fine?

Thanks for all your help fellow members! :beers2:

    Ernie,
I might just have won the carb. you were looking at. 7041544, closed over the weekend. Vendor had it listed as an Olds unit.
    I do have a 7040247, '70 455 Buick, from a Riviera. Rebuild kit, float & pull-off.
Rebushed & cleaned up. Not tested or set-up. This is available should you get stuck.

What's a decent price on these carbs? If I don't get this one, I'll let you know. Thanks Steve.

Steve, maybe you should take a look at that carb Ernie is considering. Been a long time since I had a 71 350, but it looks kinda messed up to me-- the choke pull-off with two nipples, and no rear pull-off. :Do No:

Looks like the wrong pull but an easy fix. Rear pull-off too easy to get.
No pics of the carb. number stamping so hard to verify.
I paid $25.00 for mine on the weekend, bought another a year ago @ carlisle for $10.00. Both cores.

Are you guys referring to the one I'm looking at on evilbay? I'm kinda confused here. I asked the guy to get me more pics of it but hasn't done so. Not too familiar with the parts of a carb, but learning as time goes on. I was kinda happy to find a correct one for my 71 but if the carb doesn't look right, I might be stuck (if I win the bid). :Dou:

www.blake.com/oemcarbs/ is a good source for carbs and will probably even have yor correct #. They sell nice stuff but are pricey.

As long as it's a 7041544 like the vendor states you will be fine. Aftermarket parts will vary from the originals. Looks like probably just an incorrect front pulloff. $10-15 part.

    For $25 you did OK.
However, I think it's not just the wrong pull-off, but I think the whole side plate has been swapped for an earlier one, as I don't even see the mounting tabs for the rear pull-off. (I'm pretty sure all 70-74 Buick Q-jets have a rear pull-off.)
On the other hand, it will function perfectly fine without a rear pull-off. It was a specialty thing for emissions when the choke was partially open, IIRC.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll just have to wait till it comes in then take some pictures of it and post it up on here. I hope it isn't in bad shape. :(

Nice looking carb. The seller took some good photos of it. Good find and great price!

It does look nice. But, it looks like it's missing the linkage to open the secondaries, correct? Or am I missing something?

Do you have these two books yet?
    http://www.amazon.com/Rochester-Car...63014/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b/104-6906138-6541537

The Doug Roe book has been in (and at times out) of print for years. Great, great book for learning how to rebuild a q-jet. It covers many rochester carbs as well, so it isn't wall to wall Q-Jet, just so you know. The beauty is of it is that it shows you EVERY step in taking it apart, and putting it back together. Try doing that from a mag article , and you will likely end up with a pile of junk if you are not familiar with carbs. The book is getting a bit outdated in some respects, which makes this one....

    http://www.amazon.com/Rebuild-Modif...94189/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b/104-6906138-6541537

A good one to get as well. It has many a full sized color pic(The Roe book is all B&W) showing the main differences by year, and by make as well. Rarities, etc. I just got it last Christmas, so haven't used it as a reference for rebuilding, but I recall it showed how to replace throttle shaft bushings(Something I have never done before, and would have, if I hadn't sold my last GM car a month ago!:ball: )

Oh, before I forget, do any of the Junk yards in SoCal put carbs neatly aside the way they with body parts? Who knows, my be still cheaper to find carbs on ebay. Here in Atlanta, the Pull a part chain lets you take the stuff off, and the carbs are dirt cheap, around 20 bucks I think. Thing is, whenever you go, you find the carb was about the first thing picked off!
