I'm getting close to having the design complete for my True Slap detent plates for the '70-'72 automatic floor shifters for Skylarks, etc. I understand the neutral safety switch was on the column for some, and on the shifter for others. I need to know which cars have it on the shifter. Thanks for any help. Dan
Thank you. I've had a guy with a '71 tell me he has the switch on the shifter. Can someone with an assembly manual for '71 and '72 please check this out? Dan
Dan, You have to remember that these cars are 50 years old. Lots of parts get swapped in 50 years. So do the cars. Does this guy know the COMPLETE history of his car? Here are 2 pictures from the 70 and 71 Chassis manuals, that I clipped from the Shift Linkage section. The 70 is on the left, the 71 on the right. You can see the switch in the 70 diagram.
My '70 Flint car has switch on shifter and '71 Flint car has switch on column. Both are original to the respective car. Not sure when the change was made, but, page 1-13.2 shows change. Page approval/ change published 1/20/71, buy my '71 has 12/70 build date.
Thank you both for the replies. That is helpful information. I appreciate it. I don't know if he has history of the car. I only know it's a '71 with a shifter mounted switch. I hope to talk again with him tonight. Dan
If the plate mounts in the stock location with the two bolts, it shouldn't interfere with the neutral/backup switch. They mount to opposite sides of the shifter. With a 200-4R, I had to modify mine to get the backup, neutral in the right place to work by modding a GN switch with JB Weld.
It's not the detent plate that is a concern. It's the offset on the crossbar. There has to be enough clearance to not touch the wiring. Dan
