I need to drill and tap a hole in NPT. I have read that the hole can be straight thread or tapered. Anyone care to discuss the difference and which is really correct? I had assumed it should be tapered.

If you're tapping maples, you want it to be at least 10 above freezing or the tree will split. Also tap on the east side of the tree so it gets sun quicker..

You'll want to use a pipe tap. The tap will come with a recommended drill size. Tapping pipe threads is a little different due to the taper, you'll have to sneak up on it some and it will require some muscle as you go deeper. Using a straight thread tap is not the right way to do it.

Npt would be a taper thread. The parallel pipe thread is used on like hydraulic fittings and things.
