Anybody use the primary metering rod spring when re-building a Q-jet?

Mine did not have one when I disassembled it and there is no replacement in either the rebuild kit I have or the calibration kit I bought.

Is this spring necessary? The metering rods don't hang down directly over the jet... I assume that the spring helps guide the rod toward the jet (?)

I see the spring in pictures found in my Q-jet rebuild book (auth. Cliff Ruggles) but I can't find reference to it in the text. The Buick manual does refer to it's placement during re-assembly...

With flow directed toward the tip of the rod, I imagine that the spring may not be necessary...

    any comments from Q-jet guys?

Are you talking about the coil spring UNDER the power piston; or are you talking about the hairpin spring on the top of the metering rods?

From your description, I'm guessing you mean the hairpin spring on the top of the metering rods--'cause a calibration kit will have power piston springs included.

"I" would want that hairpin spring in place, but I'd also say you could "probably" do without it.

Grab one off of a core carburetor.

    Thanks guys.

Probably one of the reasons for hesitation the previous owner had a problem with (?)

    I'll give Greg a call.
