Hello everyone, I just received my ratchet shifter plate today. It's the one that BuickGSrules is selling. Does anyone know how to install one of these? Thanks in advance.

Yes, you need to disassemble the shifter handle. Remove the shifter trim plate (U shaped clip). Remove 2 springs, and 4 screws (2 each side) securing the shifter handle to the trigger and side handle stalks. Open the console and remove two screws and plate at the rear of the compartment. Carefully pry up the plastic Buick emblem at the front of the console. Remove two screws under the emblem. Lift the console off. Unscrew the shifter detent plate(2 screws), and replace with the one you bought. Reassemble console and shifter handle.

0EC00644-3111-4FE3-BFEF-E4D69E11AD32.jpeg Larry , your schematic and description is great . I seem to be having the same problem with my shifter on my 71 . I also cannot move it out of park . I have the console loose from when I removed my rugs , but I can’t for the life of me get this shifter off .
Can you take a look at the pic as you can see as I can’t get to the second set of screws which appear under the sliding top mechanism . It seems jammed in that position any suggestions . Thanks in in advance .

I was able to get the top screws out on both sides but in photo appears to be the second screw peeking out . Which I cannot get to.

Dennis if you look at the inside surface of each handle upright, there is a slider controlled by the trigger. Move the trigger down and that will move the sliders down and that will reveal the second set of screws.

When you pull up on the trigger, the sliders move up, and those screws (bottom screws) become inaccessible.

It seems jammed and nothing to really get hold up to try to move the slider CCC5C649-0313-48A6-A205-326ED983B3F6.jpeg

That's the problem Dennis. You have to free up those sliders. The screws are very special and they are counter sunk so they don't jam up the slider. If someone used the wrong screws, then may be they are jamming the sliders. Pictures don't really help. You are there, you should be able to see what the problem is. The trigger operates the sliders.

The shifter needs to be all the way in the Park position in order for the sliders to slide down far enough to access the screws. It looks like your shifter is in reverse.

You could be right about reverse because when I backed out of garage the other day and put into park that’s when it jammed up. The console was already loose so I can move that back and forth . Problem is shifter is stuck in position it’s in . Car will start but steering column doesn’t lock either.
    Thank you for your help

Ok guys thanks for your help . I had to force the shifter forward while using my thumb and index to pull trigger and slider down , holding that in position while I removed the screws with my other hand .
This is what’s under , is it pass park or something seems past the notches

Squirt some WD40 in there and free it up. Either the screws are wrong or one backed out enough to jam it.

Ok guys thanks for all your help. I do have it off now as I described in last post . It was not backed out screws . I got it to move forcing into park position with pressure now seems ratchet bar to be in wrong position now as in last photo.

It seems it’s sitting on top instead of in a notch . Is this correct ?

The shifter cable has an adjustment on the transmission bracket. I would remove the clip and the shifter cable at the shifter, then work the shifter a few times to make sure it works ok. Put the shifter in Park, and if the cable will not hook back up, then you need to adjust the trunnion on the transmission bracket end.
