Is the BCA judging format setup to handle the difference between N.O.S. and Rep-pop parts? in a concours show for example if one car shows up with N.O.S GoodYears and another has Repop Goodyears how is that judged?

  2. Duane Heckman or Brad Conley should be able to answer that question for you. I expect one of them will stop in with some info before too long. :)

    AJ,
I will not be attending this years BCA nationals, I don't think I can deal with Texas in the summer, but with that being said neither the BCA, or GSCA has differentiated between original vs reproduction tires, that I know of. Brad's prototype car has original sneakers, but I don't think any others have them, except maybe his black 71 GSX. We do not look at date coded parts either.

And if you want the whole truth, Brad's tires are original replacement tires, and are not date coded correctly for his car. So do we figure his tires are incorrect also? I don't think so. There are very few original tires left, I have 1 from a 70 GSX that has never been on the ground, so how can you be faulted for buying a correct repro.

Someday it might be fun to do what I would call a "Platinum" class, where everything is correct and date coded original. Here repro parts would get deductions, but the problem with a class like this is that no car that has been restored so far would survive. This class would really be for survivor cars.
I hope this answered your question.

Great reply,i wanted to illustrate that there are many things that come up in judging that call for a consensus of the judges, alot of ppl dont realize what a difficult job judging can be,i know i have judged quite a few events, one guy had to be removed from the show one time in bowling green and he was not even a participant, anyway, keep up the good ork Duane i see where you have been providing very good and acurate info,Al Johnson

I tell you one thing-I would not want to be around a car that is still wearing it's original Polyglas tires on it,and worse yet, imagine what the car must ride and handle like with those old, hard tires?I'd much rather buy repro Goodyears and not have to worry that a tire may go unexpectedly.

There's something about 34 year old tires that scares me.:Brow:

    Wow

Wouldn't that take all day, to check part #'s & dates? And, wouldn't you need a lift? Hum, your idea of fun! :puzzled:

    It would be neat though...:TU:

    Dan,
Platinum class cars do take hours to look at, and usually involve taking 1 wheel off. (The judges get to pick which one they want to see.)
The owners submit pictures/info about the cars before they are considered for judging. You also need to submit a "decoded" buildsheet and there can be no deviation of options, etc.

It's like a big quiz, you try to see what has been done to the car. Basically you are trying to catch where the owner changed something. The owners get an extra benefit from this, if their car can pass this type of scrutiny the value of it increases.

Some guys think fun is tearing down an engine they just hurt at the track, so they can race the next day. That is their version of fun, this is mine.

I've got one car that is a complete virgin...still even has "Michigan" air in the tires. It's one of our '86 Grand Nationals and has about 6000 miles on it. Never in rain. Never any changes from complete stock. Loaded out, too. Everything except digital dash and white lettered tires. Moon roof car to boot.

Duane, I've almost got another complete set of original Polyglas GT's for the Black GSX...it's wearing repro's right now.

Now everybody knows why I don't drive the Prototype except on and off the trailer...those old tires scare me too!

    Wow!!!!

:jd: That is neat Duane (but I sure wouldn't want to judge, not that I know enough to anyway)!!!

Of course, if you do eventually have this class, used parts will go even higher...Now what did I do with those orginal radiator clamps I replaced in the 80's??:Dou: :Dou: :Dou:

    Can you say scavenger hunt!:Smarty:

    Dan,
You hit the nail on the head. The hardest thing to explain to the Concours guys is that original parts are often better then NOS pieces. There are tons of pieces that can be reused, instead of spending the money for NOS pieces. It also keeps the cost of the resto down.

I was explaining this at one of the Resto clinics when a guy popped up and said "This is going to make us go to the junkyards for our parts." My response was "So, what's the problem with that." No one wants to recycle anything anymore.
