Rear wing install question

Has anyone installed a "Parts Place" rear wing on a 71 Skylark. I just had mine done. Everything looks great but I noticed that the pedestal is not flush with the trunk deck do to the black surface pedestal gaskets provided. Everything feels solid but I was expecting a flush finish. Its a white car and wing so you notice the gasket. I could always remove them but assume they are provided for a reason. Set up did not come with any reinforcement brackets.

That's exactly why this stuff should be fit to the car before any refinishing is done to it. Doors, fenders, wings, it doesn't matter, if it isn't fit to the car before it's painted then you can almost always expect some kind of surprise when it's time to bolt it on.

There are no gaskets under the spoiler, at least there shouldn't be. If the "gaskets" that came with the spoiler have little open "studs" sticking up into the pedestal holes, they are just meat for locating the holes to drill, and should be removed prior to final installation of the spoiler. In any case, there shouldn't be a gasket under the pedestals.

The gaskets are similar to what would be used between a side view mirror base and the body. They have the holes for the bolts to go through and are shaped exactly for the base of the pedestal. I have the plastic strips used to locate the mounting areas but thats not what I am referring to. Those were used and then discarded.

The pedistals need to be worked to fit perfectly - as with most aftermarket parts.

I took mine off and on 20 times to get them right........

I'd toss the whole thing if it came with gaskets. I put mine on my 70 Skylark and there isn't no gaskets on mine..Sounds like another rushed made part that is not correct...again.

I originally thought that the gaskets would fit within the pedestal base and you wouldn't see them. Body shop has no problem taking them out but thought they should be used as per the instructions the wing came with for stability. Wing looks fine otherwise and was prepped to molds to the contour of the trunk.

If the gaskets are hard plastic/rubber like a mirror gasket, maybe you could paint them white to match the wing so they wouldn't be as noticable.

Anyone else install a wing (spoiler) from the Parts Place?

    Steve,
Can you post a pic of it maybe a close up? I'd like to see what you are dealing with...

Car going back to the body shop today to see if I can go without the gaskets.

    Question?
Without any form of base gasket what stops water from getting in the trunk from the spoiler mount holes?
    Do you guys use sealant?

Been a while, but I've installed 3 of the Parts Place rear spoilers on buddies' cars, with no gaskets, no problems.

I replaced the hardware that was included, and went with longer bolts & washers, instead of using reinforcement brackets.

I just use a little clear silicone around the pedestal bolt holes, to prevent water leakage through the trunk lid.

Not quite ready, yet, but almost time to install a 4th Parts Place spoiler on my own car, soon!

I have a few extra trunk lids I could play with, and mount up the spoiler for reference, if you need extra pics for visual aids to help mount yours correctly.

Let me know how it turns out, first.:bglasses:

I had the same issue and took the gaskets off. If you use a sealant on install and make it tight there will be no issues. Also that gasket is a wax residue magnet. LOL

The originals had some “body putty” smeared around where the 2 studies and 2 screws went thru the trunk lid and into the spoiler.

I have never seen any gaskets on these parts.

One thing to note, for the 70 cars that had the replacement longer pedestals (71-72 style) spoilers installed, the dealership bulletin spells out that they must change the 70 style reinforcement brackets to the longer 71-72 style or “distortion of the rear compartment lid outer panel will result”.
