So i have a 1970 Skylark & just bought a nice old 1970 AM factory radio off ebay, there is a under the dash wrong looking radio in place currently. There are a bunch of old car radio rebuild shops on the internet. Just wondering opinions on where i might send it to get it converted to a Am/FM and maybe aux input for a cell phone?? Not some kind of rare need chalk marks on the frame and specific radiator hose clamps kind of resto, just want it to look original on the dash. Thank You
Jim Shepard from AZ rebuilt my AM Delco with Bluetooth capability. http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?members/j69shep.48884/ 480-235-1964
Second Jim Shepard. He fixed my factory Am/Fm radio and added Bluetooth inside on the last button so it looks unchanged from the outside. And refurbished my 8 track. Wish I could upload videos.
He did one for me a few years back . Didn't work so I sent it back to him . It came back barely working . I would NEVER recommend him . Seem he was only interested in Converting radios and not restoring them
So to me, he made it pretty clear it had to look pretty, he didn't really restore them. Unless you mean putting a stock radio back together stock, which I couldn't comment on. Plus, OP isn't interested in that either so I'd argue it's kind of moot. Mike did a nice job, and took some time on the phone explaining to me what was going to be involved in putting it back in there.
I used Richard Blankenship near Nashville, TN. He installs the Aurora Designs internals. I think he is pretty backed up, but he did a nice job. R & B VINTAGE RADIO (randbvintageradio.com).
I want to echo the post by Brett. I had Jim Shepard repair my original radio and also add Bluetooth capability and I am a very satisfied customer. He did great work, had a fair price, fast turnaround time, and had great communication that even included a video of my radio operating on his bench before he shipped it back to me. I plan to send him a few more radios soon. Hey, he also likes Buicks We also used Richard Blankenship (R&B Vintage Radio) in the past since he is local to us and he did good work but was much more expensive and the turnaround time was very long.
I'm not talking about " RESTORING " a radio to look PERFECT . I wanted a radio to " PLAY MUSIC " both on AM and FM . After 2 tries Mike Hagan failed both times . By the way he's in Fairless Hills PA last time I sent my radio to him . Like I said I would NEVER recommend him .
I had the Aurora AM/FM conversion done to mine several years ago and it's great. You can get all the bells and whistles like Bluetooth for hands free talk as well as playing tunes or satellite radio from your phone, USB input for inputting your favorite oldie music, and outputs for power amps and extra speakers. If done right, your tone controls and fader control work as original and radio looks 100% stock. (Except for a tiny red LED showing stereo FM stations).
One of the features that I like with the Aurora Designs internals is they hold all the settings even when the power is off. I pull my positive battery cable and I don't have to re-program. It gets power from a yellow accessory wire and doesn't require constant power.
I clicked on this link http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?members/j69shep.48884/)....and it said make a post to him...so did, not sure if that is the correct way to contact him. Technology is not my friend, but I can tune a Q-jet!....
I went with Barry’s 8 track classic car repair - he does a video at the end, here’s mine: http://www.barrys8trackrepair.com/ It is the same Aurora designs for AM/FM and it rocks - would highly recommend!
