One of my winter projects involves removing the dash panel to do some repair work:

-Replace Fuel sending unit and/or fuel gauge (or 'gage'... this is a GM vehicle after all. [IMG] )
-Add Oil Pressure and Water Temp gauges
    -Replace speedometer cable
    -Attempt repair of odometer
    -Replace dashboard lights
    -Remove radio, send for repair
    -Repair heater/AC controls
-Reattach vent pushrod on passenger side
-Repair clock (replace original movement with quartz movement)
-Possible repair of gear shift indicator
-Swap out steering wheel with factory wheel with the horn button on the hub. (rimblow wheels blow  )
    -Replace dash woodgrain insert

    I have two questions:
    1) Does anyone have a procedure for removing the dash they can share?
    2) Is the fuel sending unit accessed by removing the rear seat or through the trunk?

    Thanks

    Hi:

I don't know about the dash removal process - but I'm pretty sure the fuel sending unit is located within the gas tank; you'll need to drop & remove the gas tank to access it.

Is your fuel gauge not regstering correctly? If so, it may be a wiring / ground issue. You might want to check this first before having to remove the gas tank. There are lots of other posts about how to check the fuel gauge wiring.

    cheers, Ray

Have you purchased the 1970 Buick Chassis Manual, and 1970 Fisher Body Manual yet? You will find the answers to almost all your questions there.
Over the years, I have read the 1956, 1964, 1968, 1970, 1973, 1979 Buick Chassis manuals front to back and then a 1971 Oldsmobile, have since read most of the 1973-89 Chevy Truck, 1995 and 1999 Buick Riviera Manuals.
There's nothing like a book to help you learn, whether online or paper, reading it yourself is always better usually than what someone might tell you, just saying!:Comp: :3gears:  :TU:

A good start would be the '70 Shop Manual, and '70 Fisher Body Manual as Roberta has already stated - there's a wealth of info in those publications. They are the "Bible' for your projects, and well worth the investment !! :TU:

I was removing dash panels (from Skylarks & GS's) before I knew there was a manual for the procedure.:beers2:

Not sure about Wildcat, but should be similar; just start by removing the dash pad, all outer trim screws, lower steering column support (to drop steering column enough for clearance to access & remove gauge bezel). I label all hardware into ziploc snack bags, to put everything back where it came from.
You may have to remove the radio for easier access for heater/AC controls & wiring harnesses.
Once everything is disconnected & removed, it all should come out fairly easy.

I was looking for answers to the same question taking the dash apart in my 1973 Buick LeSabre. After reading a bit on the subject as far as I can tell the cable connection is the same on the back of the speedometers. There is a large metal clip and you just push the tab on the bottom in while you are pulling back on the cable. I'm adding a few pictures from my flickr account to help describe what I am talking about -

Hope this helps somebody else find the answer! Once I got it out I could see what I had been supposed to do...
