Rick Henderson arrives w/Scott Miller's new toy

Discussion in 'The Bench' started by gotbuick, Dec 7, 2003.

    gotbuick What, me worry?

I spoke with both Rick and Scott tonight. Rick made real good time arriving today(Sunday) after leaving last Tuesday. A flat trailer tire and some icy conditions slowed Rick momentarily, but he pressed on. Apparently the car was shedding weight along the way, and it's top too! :eek2:

Scott checked the #'s out all over the car. He says everything is #'s matching!!! :) The previous owner is a Mopar freak and decided parts were to expensive to fix this oddball Buick. :Dou:

Hopefully the boys will have the full story on here soon! :TU:

After that trip, Rick probably has a "Don't open 'til Xmas" tag on the door of his bedroom!

I know what it's like to lose a vinyl top - but mine happened about 1000 feet down the 1/4 mile!

It sounds like it's going to be a great candidate for a frame-off!

First I would like to thank Scott Miller for trusting me with picking up his new found toy. Also for the great gifts. They will be going to good use soon.

Second, To this group of great individuals. You really should be proud of yourselves. I was really impressed how within a few hours a spare tire was donated and many were willing to drive long distances to meet me there.

Al who posted that Scott and I needed help with the tire. Al you should be very proud getting things going and offering to drive 7 or more hours to meet me. Your a life saver Al.

John Gibson came to the sellers house and helped talk MR. Policeman from giving me a ticket for parking on a sidewalk again. I don't know what it is with sidewalks and Buicks for me! Also for manning the come-a- long. You have a very very understanding wife to have you out late at night!

Jim Weise for supplying the spare tire and rim to move the car. I really enjoyed the tour and the trinkets too! I shared with Scott when I got home. I fought for the cap. Wish I had more time to spend there looking and learning. Very clean and organized shop. No wonder you stay there till 1am when I left and got back at 7am.

There were a few glitches along the way, but for a 4800mile trip.... The tire on the trailer decided to give way. I didn't even feel it. After I pulled over for a salad at Mcdonalds, I noticed it. That took three hours to get it fixed. It was after hours, and on a Saturday night.

I think that I found the problem Scott, and I even remember taking a picture.

Some of the cool things along the way were:

When I was getting gas and I was in a shady area of town, a guy walked up from the shadows and asked me "how much you give him for the car? I started to laugh...

I found Hidden Acres on the trip. The people at the gas station weren't amused. I..... thought it was funny since I didn't have much sleep for 5 nights.

I slept in my dads truck (obviously which I borrowed) to save time and money. When I was tired, I just pulled over and slept for 3 or 4 hours, actually just when I woke up on my own.

One morning I woke up to icecycles on the windows. It was 17 degrees. I was still warm under the sleeping bag though!

I got to see Yellowstone, Waco, and The original Home on the Range. Also there were plenty of "Deer and Antelope play"ing

There were so many red paint cans dropped on the freeway it was unreal. I never did see the cans though:eek2: The drivers must have been trying to miss the deer and ........oh no, thats why........

The songs on the radio......I got tired of hearing about "Its five o clock some where" To "I can't get over you" (so answer the phone). At least thats what I thought I heard.

Its weird driving for such a long time without sleeping. I kept hearing funny sounds like the cell phone, or the radio, even though it wasn't on............

I really did see a lot of shooting stars at night.

The weather was something else. Most of it I got in front of, until the tire blowout.

I got a sunburn in North Dakota, and frostbite in Montana. Or was it the other way around?

I will post some of the pictures of the trip.

...oh yeah, would you get some sleep already!!!

    The long journey

    Rick -

I'm sure there are many great stories of car runs such as yours on Scott's behalf.

Quickly one that made me laugh. I picked up my first car (70 Stage 1 4speed :) and after driving for what seemed like forever - with a broken radio in the truck. I was getting pretty dazed and confused. At a bump in the road as I lifted in the seat I see my car on the trailer behind me and for whatever reason thought it was someone about to slam into the back of my truck. Of course a huge yell and death grip on the wheel brought me back to reality.

Only took about 5 minutes to recover from the scare before I was able to enjoy the humor in the whole thing...

Steve, That happened to me many times:shock: You would have thought after the first time of getting spooked by someone tailgateing you, that would be the end of it, but no.

Here is the photo that I took before the tire blew. I was driving about 55mph when I took this one.
