Making you go back to the dealership to get it fixed or buy a new car.

Two problems with this, first they will have issues finding techs to keep up with the mess until they need to pay them a million dollars to keep them around. The other is the government and farmers are already getting pissed because they can't work on it in the middle of a war zone or in the middle of nowhere when they have to fly techs in.

This has been going on for several years in the ag industry. You can't work on your own tractor anymore...you may own the hardware but not the software.

Voters in Massachusetts approved an enhanced right to repair law this past fall. You should have heard the scare tactic commercials the carmakers were running. You know there are $$ at stake if they are spending big money on commercials and scare tactics.

This guy has had his battles with Tesla... Who will NOT sell parts or share information to third parties. Tesla will also remotely deactivate features on your car without your knowledge or consent.

His youtube page is "Rich Rebuilds"

And it would be that bad BUT many times they CAN'T fix the car! I took my T&C to several dealers and they could not fix the transmission electronics. Jaguar owners are constantly complaining about the lack of skill at the dealers when it comes to electronics. I'm sure the BMW and Porsche and etc guys feel the same.

Yes I watched one of his videos and learned Apple can shut off the fast charge feature if they so choose . He has one and showed how long it took to charge without having the quote turbocharge option. I wont buy a Tesla and don't have a Apple phone. But I do own stock in Apple and will as long as they continue to soar. I feel they have a excellent product but don't agree with them controlling who I can take it to for service.

Most of the AG/HD world will not sell any diag software to anyone but a dealer. Any info that is out there has been reversed engineered. The auto world lucky to have the OBDII mandate.

We have some newer Western Stars in our fleet with dd13s in them. I'm not looking forward to working on this garbage. The newer diesels are getting too sophisticated, I want my e models and n14s back.

Seems like it's just as hard to find a good tech/mechanic. Not many folks want to do the job anymore. I actually gave up looking for a tech almost a year ago, just doing it all myself. Tired of the baggage and theft. Even the dealers can't fix them anymore. Had a customer last week that spent 3 grand at the local Chevy dealer to find/fix the noise he was hearing while driving his 2016 1500. They never were able to fix it, so he brought it to me. Took me all of a 3 minute road test to verify a bad wheel bearing.

The only reputable dealer close by (where I worked 17 years ago), still has most of the guys that were there when I worked there.

Im not in the Big truck diesel field, but I think its BS these OTR truck diesels have the controls on 'em they do.
I dont see the OTR tractor trailers being gross polluters
Same as with our, or any old iron, theres not enough of them to "gross pollute"
New gas engines run clean enough, leave 'em be
And new cars touting huge long warranties, they have too cause their cars are garbage.
A standard 12 mo./12,000 mi. warranty tells me the manufacturer has confidence in their product.
A 10 year/100,000 mi. warranty tells me the manufacturer knows their product is garbage, and they still need to sell it, its a sales tactic.
The days of thinking, tinkering, and working with yer hands is coming to an end:mad::eek::rolleyes:

The last 2 cars I bought had 10 year/100,000 warranties and between the 2 of them they have been back for repairs at dealer a total of 2 times. The one car is now 18 years old and is just needing a clutch. This will cost me about $200. Other than that it needed a radiator and brakes a few times. Far from garbage.

I would say the same about my 2005 Dodge Magnum RT. It's at 154,000 milks and has only had a handful of issues. The paint is awful - the Florida sun does that to cars that live outside, but just about everything works and I still enjoy driving it.

We can essentially thank California for ever stringent big rig diesel emissions standards and controls. I've driven various big rigs since 1992 and saw how every few years new standards came into being. Twenty and thirty years ago, most big diesels would spew copious amounts of black smoke. The emissions control systems added thousands of dollars to new truck cost, while pay rates remained relatively flat. The first generation DPF engine systems also had some major problems.

I drove a Kenworth with their new at the time Paccar engine/DPF system. It was a literal piece of garbage. Stranded me on the road two separate times for 2 days each. Told my employer to assign me a different ruck after the second event if they wanted me to keep working for them. Also read many stories of truck fires, usually caused by poor DPF engineering. Thankfully the newer DPF systems are far superior and seldom break down. Today's big diesel engines run so clean you can almost breathe their exhaust.

Very few people consider just how filthy ocean going ships and container vessels really are. They burn the cheapest diesel available, bunker #2, which is barely refined crude loaded with sulfur.

Max Damage I'm working on it!

This is also a big issue in computing and personal electronics. The website iFixit.com has a lot more info.

I have made it clear to my representatives that they should work to ensure we have a right to work on and repair our own equipment! Access to parts would be nice too!

Doesn't this debate make you so happy that we can all work on our classic cars, Buick or not. No computers, no software, no trickery. Good old fashioned mechanicals. I love my car. :)

The problem with the newer crap, from a heavy truck mechanics perspective, is diagnosing these things. Some of the problems don't occur without pulling a load over a decently long period of time. Dtcs are cool and all but without service information its a shot in the dark. The price to stay current is absurd. The dd13 as far as I can tell is modeled after the old mercedes they ran in some freightliners back in the day. With the geartrain on the back of the engine, its a horrible design if you ask me.
