Ripping my hair out. The restoration gone south.

  1. Hey all,

So I got a brand new engine harness for my 455 (1972 455 in a 1971 shell) which had a few stray plugs on it that are left in question per whats available and whats in the diagram, and I also got a replacement dash harness, fusebox, and a new battery. Tried cranking it, and to my dismay, ultimately dead still.

So, now I'm trying to sift back through the diagram and decipher what is what and what goes where, and double checking my work.

What i'm primarily hung up on is the distributor situation. It has a plug with 3 wires running into it, yet my diagram calls for just one lead. Also, its asking for an ignition coil, which I cannot find (for the life of me) anywhere in the vehicle. My engine harness still had the correct Y/R/P wires, and those have been properly connected (I can guarantee that).

At this point, is my best bet just running around crazy with a multimeter until I find out where the power is going? Or does anyone have an idea/remedy for me? Perhaps a unison set of harnesses so I dont worry about any mismatch issues?

P.s. ; I noticed that when I hooked the battery up, the fuel gauge went back to being E. So, that tells me at least SOMETHING is right. Somewhere.

Help me before I lose my mind.

Is it an HEI distributor, Unilite or points? If its an HEI It will have a harness sort of pig tail. You would wire your ignition switch wire to the HEI directly. At least that is what I did when I re-wired my car and it worked.

So you have an engine harness for a car with the original points distributor but if i remember correctly from an engine picture I saw in another thread, you have a later model GM HEI. Which means your going to have to modify your new harness a little.

  4. It is indeed HEI.

As for the ignition switch straight to the dist, are we talking about the keyswitch? Pardon my lack of parts knowledge btw. Still learning.

What I did on my car is I removed the resistance wire terminal out of the engine harness bulkhead connector and taped it off. I got a new Packard 56 terminal and crimped a wire on it. Then installed the new wire and terminal in the bulkhead connector and ran that to my ignition. That way, if someone wanted to ever restore the car back to stock, all they would need to do is just remove the wire I put in and reinstall the resistance wire

Yep need to run hot wire to ign terminal on fuse box. The + wire to the points coil is not used with his. Its a resistance wire and only 6 volts and won't cut it to feed an hei
