'71buickg.s. a dark and stormy night..

I have a Rochester carb which is sticking when I give it full throttle. It doesn't stay all in, just some. My tach doesn't work but it will idle at 25-30 miles an hour after flooring it. It does return to normal if you "kick it down" like you would at a fast idle start up. Sometimes you have to do it 2-3 times. I thought it might be the cable sticking. So I replaced the old return spring with 2 new ones. That is not the problem. I'm pretty ignorant so if it is an easy fix please explain like your talking to a 6 year old and I might be able to understand. If it is something that somebody with a good amount of knowledge should fix. Please give me suggestions on who can do the job.
    Thanks for your help,
    Marty :TU:

Basic stuff first: check to be sure all linkage on carb and thermostic coil choke are clearing. that would hold primary open a little, but don't think it would give you THAT much open. Your 71 wouldn't happen to be a very late build car with the electric activated device leading to one of the vacuum brake/ pull-offs, would it? Hope not!!![$$$] (search this topic under resto section, I believe the topic came up in a discussion about late 71 battery cables. Mine is last week of may build 05D)

Food for thought: it is possible that the secondary throttle or linkage is not completely closing. I am not referring to the air valve, but to the secondary throttle valve operated by the throttle linkage. Ifthe shaft sticks, or the throttle valves themselves are not properly positioned on the shaft, they can stick in their bores. In my tenure at GM, I saw my share of similar issues. Good luck Ray
