Roll bar or not?

Just a question for anyone who has run at Cecil county track before. I keep hearing that the track is very fast w/ very good traction. My most recent outing to Englishtown, last night, left me w/ personal best E.T of 12.49. I currently do not have a roll bar or any of the other necessary items if i was to break into the 11 . Is it possible that i can pick up a few tenths, granted i dont expect .4 on just the track alone, but if i do some tuning? I am kicking around the idea of installing a roll bar before Cecil so i dont run into any problems. If it isnt before Cecil i know it will be over the winter. So any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Will, Cecil is just around the corner, Oct. 10/11
Don,t do anything hastily with a roll bar, they take time to install correctly, they should be welded to the frame, not bolted to the body. Save it for a winter project, come to Cecil and have some fun with your car, I believe you need to have a roll bar in a car when it runs 11.99 or quicker for IHRA and 11.49 in NHRA
don't quote me on those numbers, maybe someone can set us straight on the rules.

I run at Cecil and 11.99 is the number. I would not do any changes as Bruce said. The big difference between E -town and Cecil will be temperature and traction. If the temp is the same as it was at Etown the beginning of the mouth, you should gain .10 -.15, if the temp is 15 degree cooler, you would gain another .10 or so.
    Good luck and have fun!

Will, Cecil has a rep for being the real deal in tech. Tell them your car runs mid 12s and you won't have a problem (in your case you won't even have to lie). Once you get past the tech guy, if you do run 11s, they probably won't even notice. I ran a string of 11.60s with my T/R at Cecil two years ago and nobody said anything. I did dial 12.00 in eliminations though, just to stay under the radar, so to speak. :bglasses:

    69GS400s ...my own amusement ride!

A couple of years ago at Cecil they read me the Riot act at tech about a convert. without a bar not going faster than 14.00.......3First 2 runs I played possum and just was in it to half track and braked and stayed above 14

3rd run I hooked good so I stayed in it until near the end and braked HARD....ran something like a 13.8 and they came and Re-Read me the riot act - saying "Run like you did the first 2 passes and you're fine all day"

.....so they were definately watching - Me at least:Do No:

I look at it this way.

If you run so fast that you're illegal, you win!

Seriously, if you jump into the 11's and they kick you out, I guarantee you'll have a smile the whole way home.

hey guys thanks for your input on this... I guess your right Bob, if i do get put back on the trailer for breaking into the 11's i would probably be nothing but happy. However as far as racing goes i would hate like hell to have to dial in at 12.0 and try to guess when to back off. I would be losing my cinsistency and thats no fun. Oh well, i guess i will just have to see what happens.

Well, I thought about it and i wound up going for the roll bar. The roll bar came in fri night at the shipping depot, so i went and picked it up. My brother in law and i started messing around with it fri night. A lil more on sat night and by sunday it was all welded in and ready for paint. Now all we have left to do is a final coat of paint, and put back the interior, fuel cell and do a few other small things. We were a little hesitant about starting it before Cecil, being it was less than a week away, we have limited time to work on it due to our jobs and the fact that we have never put a roll bar in before. But i must say it came out well and we have plenty of time to get the car ready for Cecil.

    Hey Will,

I'm in the same boat as you. My car has been hovering right around the 12.0's for the last month or so with numerous runs in the 11.90's recently with the cooler weather. I too just received my roll bar on Friday but that's going to be my winter project along with some paint for the car.

I can tell you this. I was at Cecil County last weekend for the Division 1 Bracket Finals and my car dipped into the mid 11.90's on several occasions with no one saying a word. Granted, maybe there were so many cars there that they couldn't keep track but I'm a little concerned about this coming weekend. I actually "slowed" the car down knowing that I could only dial a 12.0. But this coming weekend, I'm hoping to dip into the 11.70's. I think I'll play by Doug's rules and run as fast as I can as long as I dial up during eliminations. This will probably be the last time I run the car this year, so I gotta go for it!

    Hope to see everyone there!

    Bruce,
You have it backwards, 11.99 for NHRA and 11.49 for IHRA. Unless it's a convertible and then a roll bar is required at 13.99 for NHRA and 13.49 for IHRA.

    Dave,

I got my kit from S&W Race Cars in Pennsylvania. The 8 pt. kit was $149 but I added the Pro Street rear bars to clear the rear seat and the swing out side bar kits in case I need them (the wagon has more narrow doors than the GS's so it might be a little tough to get in and out). The whole thing with shipping came to just over $300. Ordered it last Wednesday and it was at my house Friday at noon. Really nice guys - I am worried the rear bars won't be long enough for the wagon. They said if they don't fit, send them back and they'll make me up some custom ones, no charge!

Ken, does that mean the car's going to be running much quicker than at Englishtown? Looking forward to seeing that GS fly!

Doug, so you wanna go 8's??? Put me in the car!!! I don't care if you rig it up for remote control - whatever you gotta do! Forget blocks on the pedals - I'll just sit there and look good. You can do the driving from the pits!

See you later in the week.

Butch, put you in the car eh? Yeah that's the first time I've heard that one! Yeah Right! And I'm the only guy to ever call you "Butch"!! Dude, that's old hat. It's not about getting the car to go an Eight. I did that with Scotty four years ago. That's where the 8.94 in my signature came from. The challenge that faces me is to do it while I'M driving. Went out to Atco again tonight...same old story. 9.07 and 9.02. At least I hit 150 again!! That's twice now. See ya at Cecil. Doug.
