Rust in a wagon specific area...what to do??

I have some rust coming through in my 67 Sporty. It is in the lower section of the rear pillars, by the tailgate. Each side has about a quarter sized spot bubbling through about 2 inches up from the little piece trim at the bottom of the pillar by the tailgate. I have no problem fixing it, but my question is why there? Thats an awfully odd place for rust to be coming through. Is there something that is known to leak where water gets into the pillar? I dont want to fix the rust only to have it come back in a year or so. Top glass leaking maybe?? I have never had one of these cars apart so I am not sure where to look. I am hoping some of you guys have "been there, done that". Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Rick, sorry to hear about your problems. If you can post some good pictures of all the area where the rust is and the area above the rust somone might be able to help. Some of us have had them apart:grin:, not saying I will have an answer, but I've had it all apart, and got it all together again.

Years ago I almost bought a 63 Olds Jetfire from Florida. The only problem was it was rotted at the base of each windshield pillar post. I had never seen this before and was told that was a common place where heavy moisture gets trapped on those Florida cars.

Could the same be true with your spot on the wagons?

Here is a shot from each side. Sorry about the rotation. I will get a shot of the glass/roof area above the pillars shortly. Just looks like an unusual area for water to get into. Sometimes I really hate being on the east coast, in the heart of the rust belt.

While I have no answer to your question. but I have seen cars rusting in wierd places. a couple cars I have seen it in the middle of the quarter panel. a rust hole. not just a dime size from a paint chip but a huge hole.

It could be that moisture may have gotten behind the weatherstripping.
