    Hi

Im looking for a new carburetor for my 69 GS400. I have Fullength TA Headers and a pypes 2.5 X-Pipe exhaustsystem. Here in switzerland is a restoration of my old carburetor more expensive than buy a new one. Can anyone advise me a brand?

My carb is a Rochester Quadrajet 7029242 LG

    thanks

    Robert

Stick with your Q jet carb. They are the best for you application. They are not reproduced.

Get a pro to rebuild it with a Cliff Ruggles kit which is more complete than most. Or buy a q jet redone by Cliff or JW.

Buy some Q-Jet books and do it yourself! Once you get familiar with the Q-jet, they make sense.

JW owns this Board. Both JW and Cliff rebuild carbs for Buicks.

I would be careful about just buying one off the internet. Ideally, someone needs to first know about the specs of your particular engine.

I suspect that Cliff would be able to build a Q jet for you, if he knew the specs of the engine. He will have his share of carbs, parts, and peripherals to build something that will work well with the application. BTW, I was hesitant to rebuild my first Q jet some 35 years ago, but finally took the bull by the horns. By being careful, and attendant to details, the success was a trip, to say the least. Cliff will have the necessary parts to resist the chemicals we now call gasoline. Just be sure to check the passages after the cleaning, and you will succeed. Ray

We have quite a few early Buick cores, and completely restore and send quite a few carburetors overseas. I attached a few pics of some recent work, a couple of early (67,68) Pontiac Ram Air carbs, and a 1959 Cadillac Tri-Power.....Cliff

I like the cookie tray idea Cliff. Keeps stuff from rolling off the bench. Nice

Thanks for the help. Cliff i have realy no experience with carbs, i just want a good carb for my buick. Are the 67 68 the same? electronic or mechanical choke?

    thanks

We get the cookie trays at Gordon Foods, about $8 each. No less than 12 of them in use at any given time around here, and we still loose parts once in a while! I traced the mysterious parts loss to magnetic screwdrivers, as they pick up parts and you end up dropping them outside the trays.

All the Buick units prior to 1975 will have divorced chokes. They still make an electric replacment for the intake manifold, but we don't stock them do to lack of interest and they are expensive.

The Buick units thru 1968 will use the early float/fulcrum arrangement, the 1969 and later units are greatly improved, and preferred for high HP applications. They pre-69 models will also require screw in bottom plugs, they always leak at the cup plugs......Cliff

    Robert,
You cannot do better than getting a carb from Cliff. He has written his own book on the Q-jet. In the Pontiac world they bow and throw flowers in front of Cliffs feet  Just get in touch with him, tell him what you need. Then all you will have to do is bolt on and go.

Thanks. That's the way we prefer it as well, contact us thru the website via email or call the shop for parts, carburetors, etc.

We have to limit our phone time for free technical advice, or I wouldn't get anything else done. Be fore-warned, if you call for free help, one of the first questions we're going to ask is if you have purchased and read our book yet?

Second question will be for the carburetor number and all of it's specifics. You would not believe the amount of calls we get from folks who haven't done any homework at all, just threw some parts in their carb after problems with it, or significant engine modifications, and are wondering why it isn't working so well?

During our quest to help you, we will ask very specific questions about the engine, cid, compression ratio, head flow, cam card info, and vehicle weight/drivetrain specs, etc.

We visit a few websites to try to help folks out with carburetor issues, this is one of them. We also frequent the Pontiac Performance Years site. The Oldsmobile site wouldn't let me sign up, tried twice so far. Last time I looked, bunch of inaccurate q-jet information posted there, including some interpretations from some of my writings, etc. Oh well, guess the big Buick's will just have to keep outrunning those 442's!:TU: ........Cliff
