I am having my trans serviced, and want them to adjust the shift points when in drive. My car shifts from 1st to 2nd immediately and WILL NOT run out in first hardly at all.

At what RPM should it shift from 1st into 2nd under WOT, or at least fairly heavy acceleration.

This is a fine trans shop without any Buick specific knowledge.

Any help along these lines would be helpful.

Wide open throttle, the trans should shift 1-2 at around 4800 or so. The Stage1's had slightly higher 5200 RPM governors. You can adjust the minumum throttle shift points by adjusting the modulator(if you have one of the small adjustable brass units) Generally though, the adjustability is only 2-5 mph. One thing to look at when your 400 trans short shifts is the kickdown. Is it hooked up, and operating? If not, that alone will make it short shift. Make sure the vacuum supply to the modulator is good, and leak free.

There is an article/story somewhere on one of these Buick boards that tells exactly how to change the shift points on a th400 by filing a pin in the transmission. Very good article with pictures/drawings. I just don't remember where exactly it's at.

    Phil,
That's about filing the governor weights, to change the WOT shift points. The B&M kit is much better.

Thanks Larry. The kick down is hooked up and working.
