I'm getting new shift rods from the Parts Place(1/2" diameter) as compared
to what I have now (about .40").Can I leave the shifter in neutral and change
the rods one at a time adjusting them the same as the ones that are presently
in place? The present rod stops are adjusted correctly as there is no problem
shifting in or out of any gear. Thanks Pete The link shows what the new rods
    look like.

There is an alligment hole in the shifter mechanism. Insert a plastic allignment key or a drill bit the same diameter in the hole. Then adjust the rod length to fit.
