On a 70 GS 455 what is the proper color for the shifter ball?

    Then still Black.

Supposedly the only options were whether it had the 4-speed diagram cast into the ball on not. The rule of thumb is the non-consolette cars did not have a shift diagram (boot only) so they carried the design in the knob. While the consolette cars had the diagram on the consolette so they came with a plain knob.

Again that is the rule of thumb, but there are a few documentated cases of consolette cars with the diagram in the knob also.

DL, Feel free to do what you want.
I am not going to argue about this. This particular war was fought and won many years ago with many original owners of 69-72 GS & GSX's being consulted.

Yeah a black ball with a black dash, a black boot or console, and black carpet sure would look crappy wouldn't it. Interior color had nothing to do with it. You think the line workers gave a sh** about the color interior the car had?

PS. You better bring a black ball to Concours Judging.

For what it's worth, I pinged this topic a year or more ago and was well edcuated by Duane and others here on the Board to move towards a black ball with white pattern. My interior is white and my car is non consolette equipped . The black ball looks great ( I think). I can only imagine that a change from black to white (or reverse) may well have happened frequently back when these cars were new, sometimes on the dealership lot I'd imagine. Just too easy and folks had preferences then like they do today. As such, an original car may well have been known to have a white ball, but was likely produced with the black one. One possibility, I suppose. Steve

No it's not, and to be honest that is exactly the thinking you should have when going into Concours Judging. As long as you end up with 385 points or more, and get your gold, then it doesn't matter if you do something non-original to your car.

Way too many people get too wrapped up with loosing a single point or two.
