shifter trouble

Ever since I put my trans back in, I notice that my shifter shifts fine from P to R, N, and D, and back to Park, but when I try to shift lower than that, it binds. It goes down to 2nd gear, but really binds trying to upshift to Drive. Now it's stuck in 2nd.

Anybody have any idead what that could be?

How do I get the console out to check the top end of the cable?

    Thanks, Frank

    Frank,
I think it is much more likely, thaat your problem is at the trans end of the cable. It is very easy to bend the sleeve at the end of the cable, and it binds. You can usually straighten them out, but look at that end first. To remove the console, carefully pry up the emblem, running down the middle of the woodgrain. Under the emblem is 2 screws. Open the console door, and there are 2 more screws at the rear of the compartment. Then disasssemble the shifter handle. Remove the "U" shape chrome plastic clip, don't lose the springs underneath. There are 4 small phillips head screws that connect the shifter handle, and trigger to the shidter linkage. Remove these, and the handle pulls straight off. Then lift the console off. That's it.
