Should there be a slight amount of play in the wheel bearings?

There are PLENTY of factors involved here. Road surface conditions (level, smooth, type of surface); Suspension (ball joint wear and tear, bushing wear, Spring settling from years of use); Brakes (dragging, uneven wear); Wheels (correct style and size, damage); Tires (you said new, but could be defective); Frame damage... What method of alignment did the shop use? We could go on..

    so whats the solution?

It happens on all roads. so road is not a factor

the car has 40k original miles - should ball joints be worn already?

the tires are new - maybe they are defective

the car has never been in an accident - frame damage is unlikely

the back tires wear pattern is perfect

spring settling? I have never heard of that. Ive heard foundations on houses settling. never heard of coil springs needing to settle.

brakes dragging? that is possible, i do get slight pulsating pedal when stopping. The rotors are thick and have never been ground.

they used a laser machine. The wheel covers were on, they attached something to the wheels over the wheel covers and they had a computer screen and it would be green or red and show the current specs.

Ill rotate front tires today and see if that has any affect.

jason, you are right, the car does not pull to the right anymore it goes straight to slightly left. Is this because there is a wear pattern established on the tire to go to the right an when i swtiched them the wear pattern now takes it to the left? The tires only have about 200 to 300 miles on them.

It depends. Its either tire conicity, which is in the belt, or the tires were worn that unevenly in 300 miles. I dont know.

I would just keep rotating them. The way I do it is to criss cross the fronts to the rear, and move the rears to the front. Rotate them every 6k miles. They may straighten out, they may not

What I dont understand is how the alignment shop let the car go out the door that way. A good alignment tech will test drive the car before and after. if the car pulled after he was done, it should of been addressed before the keys were given back to the customer.

You should of also been given a printout of the alignment before and after so you can see what was changed. Every customer got one and an explaination of what I did to their car

Your car has caster, camber and toe. And the upper control arms are adjusted with shims. Old school. Alot of the kids manning the alignment racks today will just do a toe adjustment and pull it off the rack. They cant be bothered with the other adjustments because they're a PITA.

He never shimmed a car before. This was his first one. He did shim it and had i t on the screen showing the red out of range area, then he showed me it was all greeen. The tie rod was adjusted i watched him do that, and shims were removed, i saw that too. For the most part it was aligned BUT, i never noticed it pulling before, only extreme wear on the outside of BOTH tires.

It pulled right away with the new tires from day one. Now that i rotated teh front tires with each other it doesnt pull much anymore, slightly to the left.

How can I have the conicity of the tires checked?

Extreme wear on the outside of both tires? On old tires you took off or the new ones?

If your happy with the way the car is aligned now and the car goes straight, leave it be.
