We have a 71 Skylark with a Rochester 2bbl. Recently we rebuilt it and for the most part it is fine. However, I recently let a friend look at it (he is more car savy then myself) and he felt it was running a little rich. Being a novice, would adjusting the 2 air screws on the carb help with this or is there another (external) adjustment that I can make? (I'm trying to avoid having to take it apart again)
Yes it would if the problem is at at idle. You rebuilt the carb but didnt adjust the mixture screws? Why does your friend think its running rich? If they are way out of adjustment, the baseline to start them out at is 1 1/2 turns out from bottomed out. Put a vacuum gauge on the engine and adjust the screws to the highest vacuum reading.
Here are a couple of online guides or tutorials on the subject. http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/howto/45638/index.html http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/186.cfm
