Hi guys, I'm Andre, a new member. Got an skylark '72 350 sb, stock with flowmaster 40 and dual 2,25 exhaust. At idle it got a nice beefy deep sound, but when I tap on the gas at around 1500 rpm the growling beefy sound fades out and instead a loud clicking / ticking sound comes up. Hard to discribe so I put a short video on YouTube. Link below. Some mechanics said that's the flowmaster 40 sound. But for me it sounds like something is wrong. Do you have any suggestions? Would be nice. Greets Andre
My first bet is an exhaust leak at the headers/head. I would try some Remflex gaskets from BJ: https://www.bjsoffroad.com/Remflex-Exhaust-Gaskets-Buick-350_p_730.html
I vote exhaust leak too... Exhaust manifolds to head. I say passenger side...just a wild guess. That's where my old 350 leaked. And definitely yes on the Remflex gaskets. Happy Thanksgiving!
Sounds ok to me but you can always put your hand around the exhaust at head and feel for air coming out between heads and headers. Usually the middle up top will leak first or one of the ends will leak and usually on the top. if leaking it will make a pft pft sound plus you can feel the air come out when you rev up the engine to 1500 rpm
Hello at all and thank you for your feedback. A leaking seal was one of my first thought too. Thanks for the link. Then I'll change the seals and see if it gets better. Hopefully without cracking a bolt I will report.. Greets Andre
Take a chunk of garden hose about 2 feet long and hold it close to your ear while poking it around the cylinder heads. An ear plug in the other ear helps. Have a friend rev the engine a bit and poke around to find the noise.
