So I ordered a trans from PAE And he asks if I want hard or medium shifts. Oh man what a question. As is stock it shift pretty hard. Shift kit hard sounds like more fun. Anyone with a weighty car have an opinion on which I should chose? Its goin in my 80 wagon, but could end up in a lighter car.
What you want is firm. Not so much hard. A tranny that chirps the tires is loosing time making it down the track.:TU:
I agree, ask Jim to make it a firm solid shift, but not hard. I removed an aggressive hard shift from my old combo and noticed absolutely no perf. loss when going with a more street friendly firm shifting trans.
I ended up leaving it up to him. If I was on my back in the drive way, id probably install the hard but I let him chose.
We rebuild a lot of race trannys, I work at Metro Transmission Inc. I would highly recommend the "Mild Shift kit", unless you are gonna race yours the harder or heavier shift kits can be a little annoying if you are gonna drive it a lot of the track. We do 85% of the shift kits we put in the trannys would be considered "mild". We installed a shift kit for a customer one time and he supplied the shift kit, and it was a hard shift kit, and we told him it would be, and that thing would about chatter your teeth on the shift. If you have any particular questions, feel free to ask, because it's what we are paid to do LOL.
I got my sp400 from pae a week or so ago and can't wait to get it in. I think jim put the hard shift in since i bracket race it every other weekend :3gears::beer:Brow:
Got the PAE sp400 in the car today. Wow what a difference. toggle switch off the car takes off just like it did before. toggle switch on the thing boils the drag radials tires on the street. No track testing yet. But I expect it will pick up 2 tenths in 60 ft. I was getting 1.8-1.9 60 ft. I bet it will be at least 8.7 if not 8.6:3gears:
Glad everythingf worked out well for you, hopin to get mine in today. Dunno if I get to test it out though. Gotta do the exhaust too. Since itwas all out I notched my trans member for clearence. Plus I really really really didn't like how the stock y pipe almost touches the oil pan. That can't be good on the long haul pumpin excess heat into the oil.
are you going to use the cat oil they recommend or type F. I used the cat oil and man that stuff is thick but it seams to work well.
I went with Royal Purple Racing ATF Got the 5gal jug from Jegs wich made it cheap-ish....... Summit onlys sells it by the quart. Though I wish they tinted it a darker purple, its very very very hard to read on the dip stick.
I love my new trans. I did have the dual exhaust kicking out before the tires but it was to loud. All I heard was one side really, which sounded funky. So I loosened up at the manifold and turned them in, then using some flex pipe I had ran them over the axle. Ahhh much better, I now here a mix of both sides and doesnt sound funky to my ear. And chirpin 2nd gear is just to cool. Go out and get ya one of them 0% for one year, low intrest CC and order a trans from PAE today.
yeah i know what you mean, i used the cat oil and it is hard to see on the stick. I bought a 5 gallon bucket of it for $80 ouch.
5 gal jug of Royal Purple is $140 thats an OUCH.......... Though it was cheaper that way, then by the gallon or quart..... cheaper then RedLine.
HARD!!! Their is nothing like pullin a rice from a light and 1/2 and 2/3 chirps. The to see the look on their face when the find out it is an automatic... Kind of sucks in the rain though:3gears: ... Michael
Well Im still a peg leg so there shouldn't be any sudden changes in direction with rain or snow, just some wheel spin.
