In line for a minute. What exactly is the application? I've seen some 4 speed cars with them and my 350-4 speed did not have one. Have an M20 and 455 4 speed set up going in a car someday. Would I need it?
The ones on the 4-speeds are a 90 degree like this one. They were NOT used for 3:42,but were used for 3:64 and 3:91.
I think these were dealer add ons to fix speedometers that were off. They were available in a bunch of different ratios to fine tune the speedo. I would not doubt they were factory installed on specific ratios. Much easier to add this in line than come up with a new set of gears in the trans.
I had a few 72 automatic cars that had that straight adapter. TH400 cars,if that helps. One of the main reasons that the 4-speed adapter was a 90 was the issue with the speedo cable. The 4-speed cars already used a longer 68” speedo cable, due to the speedo port being located on the passenger side. If you extended it straight out,you are getting even further away and still need to have a slow bend in the cable.
That would be a first for me. My 455 4-speed 3:64 has the 90 and every other 70-72 4-speed car that didn’t have a 3:42 had a 90. Is the one on your car the same numbers and calibration as the one you have for sale? I had a 72 455/TH400 that had a straight one,but made no sense because it should not have needed one.
