ST-300 pressure regulator valve

I've had a thread going on this in the nailhead section, but it's really a transmission related issue so I figured I'd throw out a wider net for transmission experts here....

I was trying to speed and firm up the 1-2 shift in my ST-300 in my 65 Gransport. Someone (who's advice I trust) gave me the tip to increase the line pressue some by stretching the pressure regulator asssembly spring about a 1/2 inch longer and re-install.

Now I can't re-install the regulator stack (valve, shim, washer, spring and sleeve) into the bore. I measured the depth of the bore and it seems to be about a 1/2 inch shorter than the compressed regulator stack. by compressed I mean the spring is completely coil to coil..

Is there something that could intrude into the top section of the bore that would not allow the upper valve to seat completely? I mean, I all came out of there! I am following the illustration on page 5-46 of the service manual to put the stack back in correct order...

I appreciate any feedback or experience you guys might have...

I took a look at a TH-400 service manual, as it seems to have a similar front pump and valve set up. The TH-400 looks like all that feeds into the relief valve bore are open ports, no mechanical valves or anything else.. does anyone know if the ST-300 pump is set up the same?

That would be good news in one sense, as I wouldnt have to take the tranny down to re-seat any kind of spring loaded intrusion, but I still cant figure out the bore depth issue....
