i checked the ignition fuse, it seemed to be fine, is there another fuse i should be worried about? i also checked all my grounds, everything that i took off the car has been put back on the car, i have one other route to go by, that my friend reminded me of last night. My steering column is kind of glitch, and might have something messed up with the ignition somewhere in there, my dash lights go on when i turn the key, but nothing else happens whatsoever, no clicking or anything. Another thing, my temp gauge goes all the way to 'h' when i try to start it, and another gauge does something too, is that normal?
sounds like it could be pulling a ground thru the sending units. Do you have a cable from somewhere on the block to the frame or firewall? they are very important. your engine and transmission are supported by rubber. Without this ground it won't start.
Update: nothing, i was at work for the last 12 hours. Tomorrow i get out at 5 and I wage war against all that is metal. will update then, i have a couple plans up my sleeve.
this is a question, but i think it might help you out. is there any way he can run wires straight to the starter to make it so he can crank it without the keys, kind of like hotwiring it? that way he can know that his starter and solenoid are/arent working.
tis a good idea, i did bring the starter to pep boys though and they checked both the starter and the solenoid, so im confident that isnt the issue, its getting caught up somewhere before that, there is a wire that isnt doing its job somewhere and i think i know where it is, in my steering column.
Sorry 'bout that. There is a switch that doesn't allow the car to start in gear, only in Park or Neutral. Maybe it's out of whack and may explain the funky starting/column issues you described. Just a guess. Good luck.
Neutral Safety Switch Done - you should be able to write back. Concur the neutral safety switch is a prime suspect at this point. Not a difficult adjustment, although there will be some underdash contortion and neck-craning involved. An easy way to narrow it down might be to use a remote starter switch (believe you can buy these at NAPA, Autozone, Pep Girls, etc...) and bypass the ignition switch altogether. Basically, it runs battery juice to the solenoid directly and puts the squeeze trigger in your hand. Even if you don't find the problem, you could use it to get the car started in time to win that bet. Just keep the leads clear of rotating machinery and you're on your way! :3gears:
if you got the 2 small wires reversed on the solenoid,it wont do nuthin :error: with power to the battery term(big 'un)jump to the small terminal marked "S"(switch)you can use a jumper-wire or just bridge it w/screwdriver & it should crank.the "S" term is the one on the side with the opening on the housing.if your under the car BE CAREFULL-PULL THE COIL WIRE SO IT WILL CRANK BUT NOT START.
Basically the same plan - mine just involved expending $12.95 or so on a remote starter switch, which does what he mentioned, minus the screwdriver component. This way you can stand away from the car, turn away from it, cover your head and wince while squeezing the trigger as the car starts. :eek2:
Exactly my point. Basically, you're "hotwiring" the car, although it won't start unless you have the key switched to the "on" position, or you've hotwired power to the positive side of the coil as well. :Brow:
i tried pulling my steering wheel off yesterday and failed miserably, and i learned this as i turned through year 1's catalog to find a 'steering wheel removal tool' and i did one of these: ou: im probably gonna go to pep boys or sears and pick one of these up, i do need them to get to my ignition components correct?
Have you checked the neutral safety switch yet? Before you go ahead and tear into the steering column check that out, along with the solenoid per the above. Unless this has been torn open before, or sustained some kind of fire damage, I wouldn't think this to be a likely source. Recommend verify one last time the wiring and solenoid, then the neutral safety switch, then the ignition switch itself. Good luck! :TU:
Does the neutral safety switch work off the gear indicator? if so, mine isnt doing anything, all i see is P all the time. Any idea how i would fiw this to make it move again? PM me, i dont want to confuse by hijacking this thread. Yeah, i think you should start by ruling out the simple first. Make sure all the wirings in the right post. If you have a multimeter you could use it to check how far the power is making it and where it stops on its path to the starter.
good call on the multimeter, i was thinking about getting one, probably the smart route at this point. the neutral safety switch, where is that, next to the transmission? oh and grimm, hijack away, there is not much help left for me....
The neutral safety switch is attached to the steering column under the dash. Do you have a chassis manual? Devon
