    Hello,
I just acquired a '63 special with a 215 v8 that has starter problems. When i turn the key, the starter just spinns 9 out of 10 times. it's like it's not engaging the flywheel. I replaced the solenoid with a new one, no improvement. Attempted to install a push button start thinking it was the ignition switch, no improvement. I had the local auto place test the battery, starter, and alternator, they said all were good, but that the started was "pulling a lot of amps" .... if i jump the solenoid, it's the same story. I've got points ignition, but only the battery connection and the purple ignition wire (on the "s") going to the solenoid.... Any ideas? am i missing something?
    thanks in advance...

How are the bolts that hold in the starter? Are either loose? happned to me, once.

How old is the starter? Have you tried the old 'rap the starter with a rubber mallet' trick? Sound to me like the spring isn't shooting out the starter gear.

Also, on the 215, that is the aluminum block, isn't it? is the mounting pad for the starter aluminum, too? is it possible that the block there is galled or worn, causing a misalignment? Maybe you just need to shim it a little.

Thanks for all the good questions to lead to areas I hadn't quite thought of... I'm definately focusing on either a misallingment or solenoid to starer connection..(spring and such) I mean if the starter itself was shot, it'd still attempt to engage, that is the solenoid job ....right? or am I off there....

well looks like I'll be under the car again this evening,
I'll let you know what i find to be the culprit.....

    thanks again
