Hi, just came back from a big meeting and couldn`t help but recognize everybody running aftermarket chrome wheels. Most look awesome but on the other hand made me want to go for a different approach. I`m wondering if there are some aftermarket steel wheels with plain hubcaps available. Sure I know the original Buick ones, but I`m looking for something in the 245/70/15 range. An alternative would be a classic Oldsmobile wheel. Any idea if these wheels I mentioned are available, where and how much? Jens
Hey, nice ones! You don`t see them often around here. I got some 14" Olds wheels on mine, to me it looks great, they`re matching color with the car.
Ok, found some with these guys, anybody knows if they`re good wheels?http://www.classicchambered.com/classic/wheels.html But I`d rather get some plain hubcabs with nothing on them. Anybody any idea? Jens
This is only my opinion and I certainly don't mean to ruffle anyone's feathers but wheels can either make or break a cars appearance and I believe the steel wheels and poverty caps break it. 99 times out of 100 these base model wheels came on cars that the buyer had every intention of putting aftermarket mag wheels on and didn't want to spend the extra money for the optional factory wheels. Today, in some cases they are used for the 'sleeper' look, in others they are on restorations because they came on the car. Purists don't care how ugly the cars are as long as they're "correct". As for the sleeper look, that might have fooled the first few people who raced against a new 396/375hp Nova in 1968 but after word got out that the car was fast, well, you get the picture. There are very few people on the planet now that aren't onto that sleeper thing. Poverty caps or not, the car is either fast or it isn't. One pass down the track will determine that and all the sleeper hardware in the world isn't going to make people believe it's anything other than what numbers it runs. There is no prettier wheel in the world on a `68-`72 Skylark or GS than the factory ralley wheels. Poverty caps may have their place on a Nova but they look horrible on a Buick.
Well there are a couple companies that you can get the steel wheels from or you can find them for sale used on ebay etc.. You can also find the Buick poverty caps for sale here and on ebay etc from time to time. Thats how I got mine. Keep a look out. I love the look of the poverty caps and also a classic chrome wheel. thats why i have two sets to change the look of the car if I want. as long as you go no bigger then a 15" rim don't like all the "big rim" look on the old cars.
Jens, I have a brand new set(4) of 15x7 steel wheels if you are interested. I can send you a few pics. They are new & powdercoated in silver. The backspacing is 4 1/2". $300 +shipping thanks.
1977-somewhere in the 90's full size gm had 15x7 wheels easy to find also the g-body and the b-body in the same time spand had plain dog dish caps
Hey Frank, sounds great, lets see the wheels, you can send me a PM. And for those of you who ride on chrome wheels, I was not intending to offend you, I love the look too, AR TorqThurst would be my brand. Still.... Jens
