Subaru Legacy 2.2L clutch shudder, need help!

    I should clarify, I'm only 99% it's the clutch.

When starting out in first gear, my 98' Legacy with the 2.2L likes to shake. Oddly, it doesn't do it when I have four people in the car, I assume its because of the weight.

Its a challenge to get the thing to leave smoothly with only me in it, I have to rev it quite high (No tach, so I'm not sure how high) and ride the clutch an uncomfortably long time for smooth take-offs. It shifts fine in all other gears.

It's getting to the point of where it's making driving the thing pretty un-enjoyable. I've owned three other manual transmission cars in the past and have never had this much trouble.

Is there a way to check the clutch without too much work? What else could it be? The only other thing I can think of is my shocks/struts, since they do need replacing and are affected by the load.

Any advice would be great, thanks!

So once you let up on the pedal it goes away? Its only when your slipping the clutch abit to get the car moving in first? How is reverse? Have you checked for broken engine or trans mounts? Chris

Yes, only when slipping out the clutch. I haven't checked the mounts, I'll have to give that a look. It sometimes happens in reverse but not too frequently. It seems to happen more when it's warmed up. Thanks for the response! :TU:

Last car I had with a clutch shudder had the plate contaminated with motor oil.
Fixed the leak & had to replace the clutch. Fine after that.

Pressure plates are a common problem, usually clutch disc are good unless oil contaminated.

Cool thanks guys, I've been leaning towards the oil contamination. I had the oil pressure sender crack on me, which leaked oil down the motor. It did get better after I fixed it, but still not 100%.

Anyway thanks for all the help!
